decent 3g cellphones
free medical care/universal health insurance
other than that I'd say america already has pretty much everything there is to get in this world...more a matter of getting rid of some of the bad stuff

Funny is when a fat lady walks around while someone plays the tuba. Once you've seen that, you'll never laugh at anything else. Except maybe a skeleton dancing around while someone plays the xylophone, which is almost exactly the opposite of a fat lady walking around while someone plays the tuba. Well, a skeleton is the opposite of a fat lady. But is a xylophone the opposite of a tuba? History will decide.

During my 20+ years in the Corps, I've had the opportunity of visiting and living an many countries. Some good, some not so. Each place is unique and has something to offer whether it be a humble attitude or a killer struesel! In Norway like many other European contries, they do enjoy inexpensive medical & schooling, but at a cost of nearly half their wage in tax. Is it good or bad, I don't know for sure, but my friend over there sure wishes he could keep more of his earnings. He says people tend to abuse the system by running to the doctor at first sign of a sniffle to get medicine. It's all a bit complicated I guess.
One thing that I think we really miss the boat on is basic respect for each other. It's strange that our nation which is predominantly "God believeing" folks will kill for a thrill, but be fanatical to save whales while a "Godless" nation such as Japan will kill whales, but respect each other. USA has 11 times more murders per capita than Japan. USA - 6.32 per 100,000 annually to Japan's 0.58 per 100,000 annually. Another reason is the legal system. You do the crime, you pay. None of the legal follies we see here all the time.

Feelings about religion: I believe in a dogma-free personal Prime Mover.

I'm sorry, do you not recall the entire United States Congress reconvening and the President of the United States flying back to Washington DC to pass a law that ONLY the religious people wanted?
Does the name "Terry Schiavo" ring any bells? Remember that?
The problem isn't that we aren't religious enough. The problem is we're letting public policy be guided by simplistic moral views without any thought to the consequences.
This is how people end up forcing a woman to carry a baby to term only to kill it because she can't afford it's medical care. In case you hadn't noticed, we're almost at that point. And that is squarly the fault of the GodSquad/Bushies.

1. $2,000 fee to get a drivers license (I heard Germany has this)
2. Stricter punishments for offense on the road (watched UK Cops in Britain... oh man)
3. Larger bike lanes/completely seperate smaller bike roads
4. Higher gas prices (like 5-6$ per gallon)
5. Much better public transportation methods... we are ridiculous compared to other countries.
Which will all lead to...
Less pollution, less idiots on the road, better physical road conditions, less waste, less dependence on foreign countries, faster commutes, and lower taxes (because we won't have to spend trillions updating our already outdated road infrastructure to handle more capacity).
Nah John, our country is too spread out. Public transportation works in europe only because it's tax subsidized AND because they have much higher population density. The market will cue our nation of the SUV habit without any intervention from Congress. It happened in the 70's and we ended up with Japaneese cars that all got 40MPG. This time we'll all end up with Japaneese cars that get 60MPG.

The US kind of got onto the habit because of congress. The government really went out of its way to bend rules so that the automative industry could sell and make a profit off of those things.Bouncer wrote:The market will cue our nation of the SUV habit without any intervention from Congress. Jayyy,
I'm not sure I agree. My reading has led me to believe that driving the SUV market were a sort of generational difference between mothers and daughters, combined with slick media marketing. Consider, the SUV rise has coincided with the almost complete destruction of the station wagon market. The reason for both is the same, a sort of see-saw effect. Young mothers. Specifically, young mothers who didn't want to be seen as their mothers were. Who didn't want that tie to late sixties to late seventies.
The SUV in the US developed out of a more simple, utilitarian vehicle to become the replacement for both station wagons and Mini-Vans with many trim layers and plush options. While the MV market has held on by adding trim types and luxury items, it has been significantly impacted by the rise of the SUV. The SW market, on the other hand, has been gutted. There are now only a few station wagons offered by any manufacturer, and some offer none. EVERY major manufacturer though, offers an SUV, including Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, and not only in American markets. In fact some SUVs made in the US are shipped overseas and sell out immediately. None of that, is through act of congress.
Having said all the above, there is a loophole in the law which allows SOME SUVs (Hummers) to be sold without sales tax because they are in the same bracket as certain types of farm vehicles (in excess of 5000lbs).

So it's O.K. to stab the fetus in the brain and suck its body parts out with a vacuum? That's a good alternative to being a responsible with the choices you make? How about a Man owning up and taking care of the child with Mother? How about getting a job and contributing to society. There is ALWAYS an alternative to aborting a healthy fetus.Bouncer wrote: This is how people end up forcing a woman to carry a baby to term only to kill it because she can't afford it's medical care. 2 year draft. Many examples but the one I would use to back me is Israel. My buddy said thats retarded, we don't need it because we don't have enemies all around us like they do. I say its not that but its that I think our country would run a lot better when everyone realized what the cost of freedom is.
Even by itself, thats a heck of a loophole. They classified the most extravagant, wasteful vehicle on the market the same as tax-free farming equipment?Bouncer wrote:Jayyy,

I'm not home right now so I don't have the readings, but I believe that SUVs should have heavy restrictions on them due to the emissions leveles, but for whatever reason they weren't classified the way they should have been...can't quote it, I'll check it later.
It definitely seems like its replaced the station wagon, but in most cases, It seems to me that young women want SUVs because they feel safer. I keep hearing stories about people in regular cars sandwiched between two of them on the road, and realizing that if theres a collision they"ll be dead meat, while the people in those two hulks of steel will get out of it untouched. So the more there are on the road, the more everyone else wants one, just so that they have the same advantage.
SUVs are kind of a hot item because they're in all the videos, and america sets a lot of trends on stuff like that. but you pay a huge cost for that status symbol in countries like japan, and that definitely helps keep a lid on them. I think I've only seen one hummer in fukuoka, and they're not exactly the types of cars that'll miss your attention..

also,I'm not sure if it has changed yet,but SUV's used to not have as tough smog laws as pass cars.
BTW,I have a NISSAN Xterra suv and love it,and do enough camping and fishing and trail driving and stuff, tha t I really like the features of it for my lifestyle.
and trust me,I used to be a "disco sucks/ yuppy slamming /volvo hating/ no mini van /I'll never get a SUV /person" .. LOL
but things change,
