Confused geek

Post by TeenInternetAddict »

I don't know where to post this, sorry :) I do make straight As and Bs in high school, I am about to graduate from high school next winter, but I don't know if I do want to go to college, or go ahead obtain my A+ and Network+ certs. I just love PCs and networks. I don't have the time to sit in some boring college
class four or five hours, then go to some boring lecture on the weekend, or in the evening. I just want a job that makes me happy
and pays better than what I am currently making now. If I was to go to college and get my Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science, I won't find any computer scientist jobs in Topeka since all the IT jobs are dried up. In comparsion to certified A+ and Network+ tech jobs, there are plenty of those jobs like working for a computer shop, starting up my own PC shop which I would love to do because I don't like working for other people, work for the cable company, a local business, etc. My teacher, users on DSLR, and my parents said, "Go to college, you can find a better paying job after you graduate college." But all the IT jobs has dried up and it's hard to find any good paying IT jobs anymore. No, this isn't a joke since I am very serious, and I really do need some help because I am a very confused geek :)

What should I do, Speedguide family?

Take it from someone without much education.
Those pieces of paper with your name on them is how you get the better positions.

I say take a year off and go for your certs and get a taste of real life. That will help you decide what to do.

This comes from a guy with a college background in Biochemistry and also Computers and is currently installing roofs for a living. :-/

Your road is just begining, try to get it right early in life. You may find yourself living in another state some day.

Good luck.

What he said. If you're not too certain about what to do in the future I think taking a year off is a good idea. There's a such thing in UK called "gap year." Too bad in North America we don't really have that. It's always finished hs, go to college, graduate, then work. You never really have the time to discover yourself.

Ultimately I think going to college is the best option for you. It will certainly open more doors for you.

Maybe you could look at alternatives as well like a guy I met last week on a worksite.
He took up an apprenticeship as an electrician with the view to having something to fall back on should he not be able to get work in his field after graduation. He is in his second year as a Electrical Engineering student majoring in Systems Control. After this year he is concentrating on the electrician training and putting the degree on hold till he get's the trade as a backup.

Surely in the IT field there are similar opportunities.

Problem with taking a year off is you will not go back, or at least not for several years, when your forced to because you can't get anywhere without a degree.

Now days, bachelor degrees are losing ground, many employers are looking for Masters.

If college is not your thing, try a tech school at least.

You must have some sort of formal education

Go to college. By the time u figure out what you want to do, you'll have a degree by then.

Plus there are females in college. Not in IT though but good luck.

If you got the certs you can apply them to college credit just fyi assuming you would be going for networking or internetworking degrees. I'm in school now everyone that said goto college is right on the money i have both certs been looking for work for the past two yrs since they kinda want both certs and degrees.

The masters is on the ball however you should be fine with a bacholers and some certs imho he is right in a sence they want more and more lately
