Not able to ping by name

Post by Pikap39 »

Ok this one got me. Has anyone had an issue with a system not being able to hit a web page. Here's the lay out.At a command promt cang ping out to gateway, DHCP server, mail, news as long as you use the ip address. When you ping the name you get unknown host. Ive had this problem several times with no resolution. IE rebuild does not work. Stack rebuild no go. winsock's havw been replaced still sucking wind. Its like there was a firewall in the way but one has never been installed. I know that its because the Domain name resolution is not working but i dont know how to fix out side of NT. I hope I've given enough information, if not let me know.

Sounds like the server that changes letters to ip, i think its the DNS server. For example www.yahoo.com the dns server will change it to someting like this-129.23.532.4
The servers is most likely down or you don't have your winsock files. Call your isp and check all of that stuff

Have you added in your DNS servers of your local ISP to the TCP/IP stack?

If not add those in and you should work.

Yep thats what we thought to. If you put it in static,no go. also a diferent computer on the same conection works. I agree it like the DNS server(s) were down but its not. This is isolated to windoze or IE.

Can they ping or goto 216.105.167.65(for example). If they can then it's definetly a DNS problem.

Im just making sure, your asking if i can ping out to any numerical address? correct! If so i belive i answered that question.Yes i can ping out. I know that it a DNS error. What im trying to determine is if there is a fix. The problem is with the end user not the server. I can check that. Plus i would have 35000 screaming clients. what i need to know is whether anybody else has see this before.

The problem is in the clients rig. That much has been determined.Im sorry if I seem upset Its not with those trying to help. If I'm being rude just tell me to ____!

The problem still sounds like a Winsock....see if you can ftp (by ip address) see if you get an error message....if you are not able to ftp most likely winsock....

I know it sound weird but in the IP stack change WINS resolution to "use DHCP for WINS ersolution"

Works alot for me in the past.

Well tell those people to try using a different DNS server and see if it works then.
