Heat probs continue...

Well I managed to wait untill i got my new heatsink in the mail. I finally got it installed today, while i was waiting i managed to clean out the filters on my computers intake and also dust everything out so its nice and clean inside. Well i pulled the old heatsink and the fan off the old h/s and installed it on the new one. Put on my thermal goo (cerminque or whatever its called) and everything was going smooth. Well my results kinda suck. I went from 55degrees idle to 51. only a 4 degree drop. People on newegg were reporting up to 11 degree drops. I know there is a burn in time for the thermal stuff but shouldn't i be seeing better temps that that? here is the heatsink...

35 bucks and i save 4 degrees and im still running hotter than most people would attempt....

Think i should send it back?

WTH, i just noticed that when i turn on my "abit EQ" software (monitors temps and speeds of fans and whatnot) that came with my mobo. My system speakers (in computer case) start beeping like crazy, and there are some numbers (speeds/temps) that go red and are really low (rpms) and then they settle and do it again.

specifically the "pwr" rpms go into red and then green up and then red again...

"cha" does it as well....any idea what these are?

what temps should i look for in the case? This would be the system temsp right? I was hitting 40* then i opened the side and put a big box fan next to it and im hitting 32* and it dropped my cpu to 46.5* idle.....still seems high considering the heatsink i just purchased....

Are you sure you have cleaned it properly and put on a reasonable amount of paste?

No big thing Thats the power supplies Fan Id just turn monitoring off on that.

Yea systems temp is the temps in your case. Mine is 32 ATM But alot depends on rooms temp and fan set up

Whats your CPU temps under full load with no big box fan

? What the rpms of the CPU fan?

The trick to thermal cream is real light and even.Then when placing the heatsink lock it down in one try dont pull it Off and On or wiggle it around alot.

You could also try Lapping the heatsink... It cut a few C's off my temps

Sounds like you have poor air flow through your case to me. Have you tried cleaning up cables and such? A case fan put in backward maybe?

Other than that, you may just have a Barton that runs hot. What voltage are you running to get 2.2 out of it? Have you tested the temp with an external probe? Your software readings may be high.

the cpu is running at 1.8v, and it runs at full load at 55* with this newer heat sink.

When i put the thermal compound on i followed the directions and it said to blob it in the middle of the cpu and smear some on the heatsink and work it into the copper then rub it off. THen i put the heatsink striaght down on the cpu and locked it in place then wiggled it back and forth a bit.

Is the website wrong?

okay i shut the beeping off for the PWR and the CHA. What exactly is the CHA fan? This thing is ALL over the place as far as rpms go. Im hitting 1854, then 1196, then up to 16875....its freaking crazy....

Kinda wondering if that fan is crapping out on me!

The cha is chassis fan, or the fan that you have bringing air in to or exhausting out of, your computer... The pwr is your power supply fan(s). This is most likely, however, it would depend on which header that you plugged the fan into...

Look on your mobo and follow the fan wires to see where they connect. You will see the writing on the mobo as to where it is reporting the fan from...

Personally, the only fan that I would consider plugging into the mobo would be the cpu fan. (For monitoring and alarm purposes, this can save you from frying your cpu...)

Any other fans, I connect directly to the psu as they can draw too much current through you mobo, thus burning it out...

It depends on what the alarms are set at, IOW, the fans that you are using may be going slower than the alarm is set for... I noticed that you installed a new heat sink and re-used the old HS fan, correct? If so, it may be getting ready to go bad, consider replacing it as that will be cheaper than replacing cpu, etc...

The paste/new heat sink temps will drop for ~3-5 days, however, your alarm is more refering to rpm's on your fans... Again, consider replacing fans unless you have your case open a lot and visually verify that they are running smooth and consistant... If they seem to rapidly speed up, slow down, or look a bit "jerky" in movement, replace...

I would re boot and go into BIOS, probably "advanced" and look for hardware controls, or similar. It will give you the temp of your cpu... I don't usually fool with those programs that you are refering to, up to you though...

55C is a little warm, not critical, however, keep an eye on it... Verify the temp in BIOS as I said. I believe that your fan(s) may be getting ready to take a dump...

After you worked it into the copper then rubbed it off, you should have put a little dab of it, about 1/2 the size of a BB, onto the core, THEN put the heatsink on. Sounds like you applied, rubbed off, then put the heatsink on WITHOUT putting the dab on. Is this correct or did you mis-describe what you did?

my bad, i put a dab on the core too. Actually a line since its the elongated (sp?) barton core. I'm either gonna end up getting new fans, if that doens't help im gonna try to lap it, if that doesn't work im gonna try to find a cheapo h20 cool or downclock it....

Do you have any pics of your rig? Or maybe tell us what case you're using?

other than mine is older before they added the window. I added a window myself down the road tho!

I will look into getting some nice fans going. DO you think it would be better to put the KICK arse fans on intake or exaust? Or should i buy a couple and go both? Is it better to inhale or exhale in this situation? Also should the heatsink be fed with air or have air pulled from it? thanks

Looks like your case can handle 4 80mm fans, 2 in front and 2 in back. Ideally, the fronts the should pull in air and the back fans exhaust it out. If you have different speed fans put the faster ones in the rear of the case. And be sure to tidy up your HD cables and power wires.

The heatsink fan should be blowing down through the heatsink towards the cpu if that's what you're asking.

Also, if you can back down those cpu volts and maintain stability, I would do that too. That will help with temps.

I agree with maroon.

In two of my home rigs I put a fan on the side that draw in air and blows it directly at the processor hs/f. On the AMD rig, which only has an exhaust fan in the back, it dropped my CPU tems a full 10*C when I installed an insane Vantec Tornado in the side. It's too loud, sounds like a hair dryer,

but it does work. You may get some benefit by doing something similar with a more reasonable fan.
