Networking with XP Pro SP2; here we go again $#@^%@&$^#$!!

Post by MadMax350 »

I have always had issues with my "home network". Here is what I have...

Linksys Router w/ 4-port switch
P3 800 machine running XP Pro SP2 (host)
P3 800 machine running Win98 SE
P2 366 laptop running Win98 SE

Ran the XP Home Networking setup wizard on all machines. Sometimes, I can access file and print sharing on the Win98 machines thru the XP machine, BUT the XP machine MUST BE TURNED ON and completely booted up FIRST. Otherwise, I cannot browse any other PC on the network.

I have never been able to log onto the router via the XP machine, only from the Win98 machines. (username and password gets rejected). Tried with SP2 firewall settings off or on.

Today, my network has gone down and I can't get it to work from the XP machine at all. With all computers powered up, I can browse the Win98 machines from each other, but cannot access the XP machine, nor can I access the Win98 machines from the XP machine.

This is incredibly frustrating! I am convinced the problem is with my XP software. Any advice would be appreciated (short of removing XP and installing Win98SE).

I've seen that Home Networking wizard cause more problems for people. I always do it directly, just going to networking properties (Right Click "My Network Places", select "Properties". Then right click "Local Area Connection"...select "Properties" again.)

Can fiddle with your TCP properties there, add other protocols such as NetBEUI (after copying some files from your XP cd-rom)

If your computers are having issues with TCP only, so as to not spend more time figuring out the issue (like master browsers, etc)...this might be a case where I do suggest tackling the problem by adding NetBEUI as your network protocol, leaving TCP running just for internet access.
