Security breach

Post by satyre »

Just now I was reading a forum in Skype at

http://forum.skype.com/viewtopic.php?t= ... c&start=30

I saw a message in a rectangular box as follows:

“You are 70.241.***.***! Your ISP is Swbell.net!
You are running on Windows XP and using Mozilla Netscape 5!
And I have way too much time on my hand “

The third line will change every time as I refresh that page and give provocative statements. I wonder how does he get my IP address though I have a dynamic IP.

I am using ADSL from Swbell, WIN XP sp2 with all the latest patches, Norton Antivirus and ZoneAlarm.

I did a scan just now with Spybot and Adware with their latest updates but didn’t catch any spyware.

Anybody has any idea, what is happening here? Would you care to go to the above link and see if it shows up in your PC? Look next to the screen name “Matt” where it is displaying for me.

It's a script that echos information about your connection. Nothing you should worry about as it doesn't share your information with anyone else. These have been around for some time. This site even does this to some capacity.

People will forget what you said... and people will forget what you did... but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Have you accessed that forum from that link?

If so, do you see the display in you PC as I have written?

Satyre, if I go to that link I see my info. If Joe Blow goes to that link, he will see HIS info. No one sees the info but the person viewing. It's just a programming trick, that's all.

Yes and no, in that order. But I have the Messenger service disabled, which is, I believe, how the pop-up is being displayed.

Nothing to do with the messenger service. Many websites can display that information, including ours here...we'll even tell you what resolution you're running.

Curious. Didn't work the first time, did the second. I guess you're using Java to do this, yes?
