Geforce Vs Radeon

Post by chugger93 »

I have a Radeon 9200SE 128MB currently, with a 2.4G processor, 256MB ram, etc. Im assuming my Radeon card is a bottle neck for me lately with gaming.

Which geforce 4 series could be better than what I have. I am on a budget so I do not want an FX card just yet. Should I go with a ti4200 series or ti4400 series? Im only looking to spend 60-80 dollars. Or are these two series cards just comparable to what I have?

Thanks!

Also, you might look into another stick of ram.. Does your mobo take SDRAM, DDR RAM, or... RDRAM.

This then, would highly depend on what game you want to play and at what acceptable quality that you are willing to play that game at.

My currently Chaintech Ti4200SE 128Mb play(s)(ed) ok on BFSeries, Farcry, Guild Wars (beta), WoW (Beta & Retail). Framerates avg 30-35fps (playable) with some eyecandy turned up a notch or two. I dare not play Half-Life2 or the upcoming BF2 on it which would take a decent upgrade to my current system (see sig).

If you are an avid gamer that would do almost anything to play a game at decent quality it is almost impossible to not consider an upgrade that will cost $$.

So what game you planning on playing? This would be your deciding factor...

*Edit*
Being that your ram is 256 and VC is 128 = 484 total; minus upto 25%-50% of that for system usage (depending what you run/load in background on start), you are already starting to use your Pagefile system once you start a high end game. I would take the advice given to upgrade you system memory. That actually is where your "Bottle Neck" seems to reside at.

I just plan on playing The Sims 2 mostly.

So I should upgrade my system memory to 512 and my video card for optimal performance?

My problem is, The Sims 2, just takes forever to load up, and its a tad laggy.
I want to get rid of that load up lag, when loading the game, and in the game, etc

Then that is definitely a RAM issue. 512MB should be a minimum with 1gig being a more common / reccommended amount.

the ti4800 would be cool but seriously, a GeForce FX 5700 w/128MB Ram is only $77. Go for the FX man.

RAM...with Windows 2K/XP, 256 is inadequate. You want to begin with 512 megs...more if you're a serious gamer playing some of the latest online FPS games.

When you only have 256 megs, and you see long load times with games? That's your hard drive pulling double duty. You see...the game needs to load from the hard drive...but you don't have much free system RAM to load it into, so it has to be written to the pagefile...virtual memory...in other words... back to your hard drive. So as your hard drive is loading the game, it's putting at least half of it back onto the hard drive at the same time.

You have no need for Pro as a gamer lol. People see that Pro and think....oh yeah, I must have pro so I look like I know what I'm doing. Appearance don't mean squat dude. Pro gives you a couple of little extras that mainstream consumers probably don't even know about.

So tell me old wise one...why do you have Pro, what is your need? Do you join a domain from home? Do you encrypt your files?

there is NO need to justify the expense for something that only makes you appear to be a Pro lol.

Save yourself some money...stay with the home version lol.

If you have a hyperthreading CPU or a dual CPU system. Then XP Pro is a must as XP Home only supports 1 CPU. It doesn't support SMP.
Respect it.
