Earthlink/Covad a good mix for DSL?

Post by ikemaster »

I can finally get dsl, The only provider of it here "at a reasonable cost" is earthlink. Ive heard things about elink, such as there bad because they only have 1 access point to the net which is in atlanta. is this true? furthermore, if I ping 150 to a quake server in new york now on 56k. What should I expect on DSL at 1.5/384 contract speed, Im about 7000 ft from the CO. 500mhz cpu 128mb ram. Rough estimates and info on earthlink appreciated, thanks.

Well on the speed part you might expect about 1Mbps+ and maybe 275-300Kbps+ up depending on how you tweak it. I dont know about the pings though. :)

Do you have to go to atlanta NO.. Authentication servers are all over now.
Some people get authenticated in Atlanta but go up onto the internet near there home.
Im about 6341 feet to the CO and 2.5 miles from the authentication server.

Here's my tracert to speedguide.
Elink/Mindspring uses Cisco routers I hei the Cisco the the Web.

well ,
if you read about covad lately, there not too reliable.
I had internet express IDSL 144/144 for 60$ a month with 10 emails and 50 mb web space.
no sign up fee no install fees, good to go!!
I was happy!!
then in late december covad decided to shut down intenet express, therefore I had no net!!
I had to DUN fisp's just to get on and watch my server!!
Anyway,Covad wanted me to switch to speakeasy.net ,which is 120$ a month 2 emails,10 mb webspace, free dial up (i can DUN just about any free isp in my area )
and a 100$$ signing fee!!!
this really pissed me off and i had to wait since december to get cable, and i just got it like a week ago.(shxtty)
Needless to say I had a terrible time with covad,oh and also they threw up my dsl line across my back fence to my nieghbors and the cops have been here numerous times thinking I was tapping or phreaking into someones phone box.I asked covad to remove it,they say its not there job.
This is my experience and I hope others read this as an OPINION ,I am in no way harshing Covad's shxtty DSL (hehe).

Not sure what you meant by that but it is DSL I talk with level 2 people all the time and its ADSL over PPPoE across the ATM.
It uses a program that Level 1 guys are supposed to explain that is looks like a Dialup program.
As far as Earthlink / Covad combo In this case Elink is the boss not Covad..

crazy as far as the problems you had with Covad this can happen with any of the companys be glad it wasn't Telocity or Verizon.. Did you call covad out and tell them to fix the install.. Usually the Telco is responsible for the connect into the home and Covad goes from outside to inside..
When Rhythms ran my line in from outside I ended up helping on my first install from Telocity.. I also setup my connection from Covad even though they came out to do it.

The Bottem line is you have to be prepared for the worst if you end up helping out so that it ends up being right then so be it.. Once a tech leaves he don't have to live with it no more You do
More than likely it will be a self install so all you need to do is plug in the filters and plugin the modem/bridge and your on.
As long as there wasnt a problem with the CO install..
That can happen too..
Make sure you stay on them till its to your satifaction. Or within the contract

maybe that is the case with the earthlink dsl...
Yeah i called covad and told them to get rid of my open dsl line outside off the brick wall its TIED to.They said its not there job,and to call Qwest.
Quest isnt even my telephone provider,MCI is.
When i got it installed, they said theyd have qwest out here to bury it but i had it for about 9 months and no one knew a thing about it when i called qwest, and qwest say call covad .Kinda like when you call tech support and they say you have a virus when you simply just have a corrupted file and antivirus charges ya 30 bucks to tell you tech support was wrong.
I guess ill go out there and rip it out of the green box in my nieghbors yard, hope i screw everything up.hehe
no big deal i was just sharing my experience with covad. Also internet express is absolutly the best isp ive ever seen or had
