Image Software

Post by scj6771 »

Looking for any advice on some good image/ghost software, we are currently using PowerQuest Deploy Center and have had nothing but problems, I am in the process of trying Symantec's Ghost but would like to have a few more options, we are looking to image around 30 machines a month as we are constantly replacing machines as they come off of lease, looking for a program that will image Windows XP and all of it's little quirks, we have mainly IBM ThinkCentre's P4'S with 40gb hardrives. Thanks in advance.

ive used several
acronis true image doesnt always work, sometimes it locks up, it also locks up if its service isnt running which means it wont work when in windows safe mode making it useless in some situations where you cant access normal mode, its bootup disk i also had problems with cuz it wouldnt locate or identify its restore file or say its invalid, also sometimes its restore file is somehow corrupted without you knowing untill you need it, you must have a partition to even use it, you must have its service running to use it, it does however make images quickly and easily without rebooting, sometimes it works quite well and does what its suppose to but it is quite unstable.

norton goback works fairly well however its limited to how many save points it can create due to its large sizes and limited 8 gig save points, like any image you will lose data but are given opportunity to restore data lost but it lists every single log or web image file making it difficult to find the exact file you want to restore assuming you remember its exact name.
i have encountered situations where it would not work or it lost all its save points for some unkown reason, many times its limted save points are a severe hinderance and backing up to its earliest point still gives you the same problem again, also has no real options, it forces monitoring on all partitions even though i would prefer just monitering of c drive

restore it..i never could get the darn thing to install, it would say i must remove its previous installation even though i never installed it before in my life or have a new xp install

powequest seems to work quite well, the only problem i encountered is sometimes it wouldnt want to reboot to create the image forcing me to go itno dos mode and do it all manually, as with all the others it will not work if you use larger than 4k cluster sizes

i ended up going back to using xp system restore, evne though its horrible at least it works and its service is unoticable and doesnt seem to hinder performance
