The Vancouver USGS has officially classified it as an eruption.

Hmmmmm. It shot a cloud of ash 36,000 feet into the air. That's not normal.

it may have fit the basic minimum requirements to be called an "eruption",

but there was no lava or explosions,

it has done similar things like this before.

all I meant was that it did'nt "blow" like it did in 1980.

It has not exploded like this since the second eruption 20-some years ago. There was no flowing lava in ANY of the previous eruptions as the lava in St Helens is considered "old" lava and is as thick as peanut butter. Shots inside the crater showed hot, glowing lava. This was absolutely an explosion as witnessed by people close to the mountain and by the USGS cameras and various measuring devises they have on the mountain. See the link below too. Great photo of the actual EXPLOSION.

The last time I was around St. Helen's was in August of 1994. The devastation was still very surreal.

Thanks for the pictures and links Dakota.
