internet settings for cable on new computer

Post by rclayton17 »

We just purchased a new computer and we now have WinXP pro for the first time. We have been using win98se.

So I did the basic automatic detect internet setup stuff, since we have roadrunner cable. We are going through a Dlink Router.

At first, I couldn't browse any websites, so I went into the router stuff by typing 192.168..... and I didn't change any settings, and all of a sudden i could browse a few web pages, but not all of them worked.

Then I disabled the windows xp firewall and that seemed to help. I could then browse all the webpages...

But it seems like I still have some problems browsing. The first time I try to open up a webpage, it usually can't find it. Then or the 2nd time or even 5th time.... and so on... of clicking, i can finally get on the website. One time when it said, couldn't find web page, it showed a link to that webpage and i clicked and it worked...

Anyone know what might be my problem? Do you think it has anything to do with not being able to find the router for DNS stuff?

I gave the computers manual ip's and it seems to have fixed the problem on the winxp machine. Thank you very much.

One more problem though :D :

On the winxp pro machine i try downloading a video driver from nvidia's site and it was going at 130KB/sec. On my win98se machine it was sucking it down at about 600KB/sec. I'm not sure why it was so fast, because I think our cap is like 350KB/sec. Anyway, the XP machine still isn't configured right or something.

Both are using the optimized cable settings on the TCP optimizer program. And on the XP machine I did that QoS tweak already, so I'm not sure why it's so slow.

98se machine:
p3 866
256mb ram
SMC 1211tx network card (something like that)

XP machine:
P4 3Ghz
1gig pc-3200 ram
ASUS P5GDC-V Deluxe (onboard gigabit LAN)

Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet settings (onboard):
802.1p Support Port A: Off
Hardware Checksumming: On
Interrupt Moderation: On
Log Status Messages: Status Messages
Max IRQ per Sec: 5000
Maximum Frame Size: 1514
MediaType: 100Mbps Full Duplex
Network Address: Not Present
Number of Receive Buffers: 256
Number of Transmit Buffers: 256
Wake Up Capabilities: Magic Packet and Pattern...

Got any ideas? Thanks for the help.
You played the Song of Storms!

Actually I just updated the firmware on my dlink DI-624 Router from 2.25 to 2.50 and it seems to have fixed the problem. My XP machine is downloading just as fast as the win98se machine it seems.
