Speed Up Firefox

I found this on another forum. worked great for speeding up firefox
If you want to increase the speed of your browsing with Firefox, follow these simple directions:

Open Firefox.
Type "about:config" in the adress bar (no quotation marks).
Find these options, double click each one and change to below values:

network.http.max-connections: 48

network.http.max-connections-per-server: 24

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy: 12

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server: 6

network.http.pipelining: true

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests: 32

network.http.proxy.pipelining: true

Close Firefox and enjoy the faster browsing.

Supercharged!

As a side note, try Deviantart.com before you do this, then try it after.

Would this on dial-up or only broadband?

I assume this addresses connection issues more than that initial lagtime I always get when loading the program. Several seconds worth. I remember people mentioning a registry tweak to resolve that, but this tip is different?

I don't know if that'd be recommended.

This tip tweaks connections per server, so on so fourth. In a dial-up enviroment it may be better to let the connection do less objects at a time.

And, yeah, this is a different tweak.

Alright guys.

I was bored, so I decided to do a little more tweaking. After looking through a freaking bunch of different tweaks, configurations, and just plain trying something, changing it, trying it again, I've come up with what I believe to be the fastest you can get Firefox.

Note: This is recommended only for people with a fast computer, and a fast internet connection.

What to do:

First, download the user.js file I have created from here
Unzip the file
Open the file with Notepad, and change anywhere you find "Joel" to the proper account name
Go to start -> run -> enter
"C:\Documents and Settings\CHANGETHISTOYOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\"
Obviously, remove the quotation marks, and change the "CHANGETHISTOYOURUSERNAME" to, well, your user name.
Once you press enter, there should be one folder at that location. It'll be labeled something like "ks5uemgj.default", but it differs for each computer. Go into that folder.
Take the downloaded user.js file and paste it into that folder. If prompted, over-write. Completely exit Firefox and restart it if you have it open.

You should notice a difference, everyone I've tried it on has.

I missed the javascript, so I didn't get to look at the code. but if it's prefetching it shouldn't be used.

Fasterfox's prefetching mechanism caches all the links on a page. imho, that may be nice for browsing, but if you're not going to follow every link why have that?

The prefetching mechanism eats up the host's bandwidth and plays h*ll with the server. it is confirmed as being harmful.

maybe when the folks who use fasterfox get their own domains and have to pay extra every month for additional bandwidth in order to keep their site up, maybe then they'll think twice. Fortunately there are methods to block fasterfox from your domain.

I just dowloaded that extension and looked at the readme. It is using http pipelining, which is a sort of prefetching, but it is not the link prefetching that fasterfox has gained notoriety for.

I also just looked at 16 whitepapers on the subject and I'm still not done researching it. From what i've digested so far, the http pipelining in that tweak is not neccessarily harmful...

here's what that tweak does:

I suppose http pipelining is ok, it's the link prefecthing that's especially troublesome.
take note of this from the link #1
"...Why not simply peg these settings at "warp speed" and forget about them? Because some of them, such as prefetching, can sometimes overload Web servers, saturate a site's bandwidth, and turn a site admin into someone you don't want to meet in a dark alley..."

note that the last tweak setting
"..max-persistent-connections-per-server", 2"
meets the recommendation in one of the whitepapers I read, unfortunately i already lost which whitepaper it was lol...closed some of my tabs...darn I hate when that happens. anyway, the recommendation was for a value of 2 in that field, as being conservative and not harmful.
