Red Hat Linux 8 Server

Post by BigAmp »

Hey,

I am just starting a Lamp class, so that means I am starting to use Linux and I need to install it on my laptop. I can use VMware or something like that. but I think I am going to do my laptop up as a dualboot.

so what need to know is what size of partition should I use? I have 40G HD. oh and what format should I have it in. the HD is NTFS at this point intime.

/boot should be 128 mb
/tmp (I reccomend) being 1024 mb (1 GB)
/ should be whatever else you want (dual-boot, probally 9-10 GB)

That setup would leave 29-30 GB for Windows. Adjust as needed - the Linux partitions should be ext3, the Windows should be NTFS.
So trade that typical for something colorful, and if it's crazy live a little crazy!

That partition scheme is ok for class, but you should ALWAYS have a separate root slice. if you get a lot of errors (which go to /var) you could fill up your root partition - which makes your system unusable. I've never used more than 300M for tmp, but that's just me.

BA - you should create (from windows) a single partition for your whole linux install. Anaconda/disk druid (the installer) will allow you to furhter break taht down into your linux volumes (/, /usr /var, /home, swap, and /tmp)

I have the partitions set up right now. I am going to be doing the linux install next class (in about an hour). I have the partition done as fallows: at the start of the drive I have a 29,000.MB NTFS partition that I have windows XP on. then I have a 9,154.2MB Linux Ext3 partition that I will have the linux on.

please try to keep in my this is my first time in the great waters of the Linux sea. but I do like to make a spash!!

Let us know how it went - I thought the linux /boot partition had to be closer to the start of the disk than that, but I may be mistaken. Since the XP partition is NTFS, you could not write to the MBR from the Linux installer, no?

You need to get the specs from the manufacturer. That will cover the X piece. Then google for linux drivers for your soundcard .

I think I got it. the manufacturer was no help the just said the Hz, so I found this listing on google:

http://linux.toshiba-dme.co.jp/linux/en ... report.htm

then went down to the red hat 9 listing and looked at the XF86config file. this page looks to be listing off what dose and dose not work on my laptop. it said the sounds card would work, so I tryed testing it again. it is there but not a lot of valume at this time.
I have not been able to get the 3D video to start working, a friends showed me Tux Run and it si so not working right, yet! it looks like I still have a good amount of tweaking yet to do. oh and I have found a problem when switching from XP to Linux. I have to trun off my laptop to get it to work right. when I do a restart the video gets all missed up. any ideas?
