speed stream modem problem

Post by tilly »

Please forgive me if i have posted in the wrong place.
Please could you help a friend of mine, she has just purchased a web cam, and can't get it working properly, we have video but no audio, after several people trying to get the darn thing working for her she got a man in from staples. This chap spent some time trying his best to no avail, he said the problem was the modem its self, he reckons it does not allow the port the cam needs to be open(something to do with the factory setting )
All her hardware is suitable, and she is running XP with sp2, her isp is sympatico ( where she purchased the modem from)
I have asked on another tech forum if the modem can be configured to allow the necessary ports to be opened, but as yet have not received a reply, my poor friend is getting very frustrated now, because her isp are saying its not the modem, the man from staples who charged her $120 to get the cam going, (and couldn't said it WAS the modem.
My friends son took the camera home and connected it to his computer and it worked just fine, so we are convinced it is the modem, oh, just thought, we even turned of the firewall in case that was causing the problem, PLEASE PLEASE can you help

Which Speed Stream modem do you have specifically the model number? It sounds like you are connecting the modem with USB, is that correct?

Does it look like this one?

speed stream modem

Post by tilly »

Hi My friend has the 5200 Ethernet/usb ASDL Modem, I'm not sure is she has it connected via USB or Ethernet.
I have mailed her and asked which way its connected, wish i could ring her--but--I'm in the UK and she is in Canada

She is getting all upset because she can't get the web cam going, and is getting all different information from sympatico and the chap who came from staples, so any help you can give will be very much appreciated.

Thank you for your reply.

There is nothing to configure with this modem other than through windows like username and password ect....

I read that wrong.

I was thinking of the modem that has router function.

Ah Right, so would you say that the web cam should work with this modem? the guy from staples said the ports are closed, and that is why my friend does not have Audio

The modem in the picture above does nothing more than dial the service provider and user acount for your friend. It has no port forwarding or firewall features.

I was just wondering what kind of web cam she has?

Is she trying to us the mic on the webcam or a stand alone mic?

And just to make sure she has nothing muted in the windows audio properties that might be conflicting with the audio properties of the webcam software?

And last of all is she trying to use the webcam through MSN messenger or some other messenging service?

speed stream modem

Post by tilly »

Hi Again,
She did have a creative lab cam and took it back, and got another(don't know which one) but it does have a built in mic, and that is the mic she has been trying to use. We have been trying it on MSN Messenger, last week i told her to down load ivisit, another friend who had a problem on messenger (again no audio) got ivisit, and we are able to get audio and video on there, we can only get audio if we DON'T use hands free, unfortunately this wasn't the case for Pat.
The two guys who have been to her home to try and get it working have looked at all they could think of (settings and such)

The camera she has is a Logitech quick cam pro 4000
She said the man from staples is coming back in the morning to try and get her camera working, he told her he thinks the main problem is that she DOESN'T have cable(rubbish i said i don't have cable)and my camera works just fine.
Pat is worried because she can't afford cable, and wants to know if a router would be a better option than the modem.
Thank you for not giving up on us

Well, I've managed to actually get Port Forwarding and other features working with the Speedsteam 5200 E242.

Here they are again:

Step 1: you have to make sure your IP is set to 192.168.2.2
Step 2: Go to »192.168.2.1/pfwizardj.cgi?code=EDIT&id.. and set "All Items" under "Profile Configuration Access" click next and choose "Do not require admin login"
Step2: Go to »192.168.2.1/pfwizardj.cgi?code=EDIT&id.. and do the same thing, except type 192.168.2.2 as your "Constant Profile IP Address".

(if everything went ok, you should now see the new configuration page)

From here, you have to access every configuration page manually. I've managed to figure out what some of them are, (plus the ones francoisr mentioned in another post.)

Here they are:

»192.168.2.1/dhcpcfg.htm - DHCP
»192.168.2.1/ddnscfg.htm - Dynamic DNS (what francoisr wanted)
»192.168.2.1/ipp_config.htm - IP Passthru
»192.168.2.1/updatelocal.htm - Update firmware
»192.168.2.1/ras_config.htm - RAS config
»192.168.2.1/naptcfg.htm - Port forwarding
»192.168.2.1/dmzcfg.htm - DMZ Config
»192.168.2.1/fwcfg.html - Firewall Config
»192.168.2.1/natcfg.htm - NAT/NAPT Configuration
»192.168.2.1/hostcfg.html - Host Configuration
»192.168.2.1/upnpcfg.html - UPNP Configuration
»192.168.2.1/ripcfg.html - RIP Configuration

I really hope these steps work for you guys, they surely worked for me.

I forward ports to 192.168.2.3, which is used on my main computer. If I wan't to change some settings, or forward some ports, I just switch to 192.168.2.2 and access the web interface again.

Are the Port forwarding steps you listed above what she has entered or are they copied and pasted from another site. The Speedstream 5200 that Sympatico offers is flashed with ISP specific features and differs from the firmware found on other ISP versions of this modem.

I really don't think her modem is the issue. And surely cable isn't going to make the difference.

I have the same modem and have used a Logitech quick cam before with full audio and video through MSN Messanger before with no problem. By default there is nothing to configure on this modem. :D

Hi there, when i posted here about my friends problem i posted on another forum too, I got a reply from them yesterday--and that was what they said to do, it looks like double dutch to me lol.
My friend said staples are taking her computer today to see what they can do,she tells me they are going to re format, she was also going to show them what we got back from the other forum, after reading your reply i'll tell her not to bother.

Sorry I posted a reply to you yesterday, STUPID me i must have pressed the wrong, because it isn't here, lol
The port forwarding steps were from another group, i wanted your advice before i gave them to my friend.
She had the guy back from staples yesterday he thought it best to take her computer away and re format it (maybe he thinks it could be a conflict somewhere) and might put her programs, drivers and such back on --and keep trying the camera.
It is one of those problems that probably has the answer stirring us right in the face.

Good luck with it Tilly, sorry I could not help you more. I hope they find out it is the software because I really don't think it is the modem. :D

Take care
