Cox cable help, crazy down, terrible up??
This just started recently, I get varying download speeds but my uploads are horrible. On Cox cable 4000/512. Normally speeds run around 3850/378. But recently downloads have been off with long pauses with nothing, and uploads have dissapeared. I ran a test a few minutes ago, and it was 3809down and 52 up. I have seen an upload of 17 recently. I'm running Win XPSP2. Here are the analyzer results.
TCP options string = 020405b401010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 56 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000
Any thoughts on this or ways to correct it? I've got both optimizer and cablenut, but using optimizer currently.
Thanks

Interesting that I came here for help and he second post I read sounds as if I wrote it! I am with Cox and have been very pleased. Recently they claimed to have 'increased' the level of speed. But I describe my experience as 'pulsating' I get a burst of data and then long gaps when nothing is happening. As a result when Outlook is checking my third party email accounts the connections time out. I use Newsbin and I can see my connection surge forward and then die.
Here are my numbers:

Wish I had an answer for you (and me), instead I can tell you you are not alone. I suspect others may be experiencing the same issues.

macroped & Bill3508, it could be a provisioning error. Try turning off your cable modems for a couple of minutes then powering it up again.
If either of you are behind a router then turn everything off including any computers that are on the network. Power up the modem first and let it make the connection to Cox then power up the router then the computers.
Bill3508, You also need to correct the following:
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Thank you for the input. I have done what you suggested to no avail. I am behind a router and I powered off all systems, router and cablemodem. I brought the cablemodem up first and waited until it had established a connection to Cox. I then brought up the router. Then the PC and went to Newsbin, becasue that show the connective speed. I am getting 5 seconds of 'surges' then zilch for 30 secs to a minute. And I have to make sure I don't try any other type on Internet connection at the same time. If I load the browser, or check email I am completely dead.earthmofo wrote:macroped & Bill3508, it could be a provisioning error. The onset of this has been fast but I cannot think of anything that would have triggered it (i.e., a new software app installed or removed, etc.) I had added Norton Anti-Spam and removed it weeks befiore this started happening.
More then likely it's a line problem if you ruled out spyware and viri also. I would call Cox support and see what they say. They should be able to test your connection to see if it is.macroped wrote:Thank you for the input. I have done what you suggested to no avail. BTW, have you ruled out the router? I had a speed issue a couple months back where my download speeds were in 100-200 kbit range and it turned out to be my old Linksys BEFSR41 V2 router. Had to keep flashing the firmware to keep speeds up till I swapped it out for a D-link 704P (don't like the newer Linksys models).

You should be at least at 700-730 kbit up. 400 would be too slow for a 768 upload.Bill3508 wrote:I corrected the MTU discovery. Also, I upgraded to cox's 5000down and 768 up and have a tech coming Sat to check on the signal levels. I just ran a test and got 4710 down(good) and 110 up(bad), should be at least 400 up. We'll see what the signals look like and go from there.

Cox service man came this morning and said there is something wrong with the line. He said the signals were jumping all over the place, which explains the sudden burst and pauses. They are sending a maintenace crew out Monday to fix the problem. We'll see how it goes. Cox has been awesome up a week ago.
