I have just got a iomega Portable 60GB HDD to back up my laptop that I use for school. It came with Norton Ghost 2003.
So what I was wanting to do was to make a Boot CD with Firewire and USB support for my Ghost. I don't have a Floppy on my laptop so a boot disk is no good to me.
The laptop is Windows XP Pro SP2 NTFS format, the Protable HDD is FAT32 format and I can plug it in via USB or Firewire. If needed I would use Nero 6 to burn the CD.
I guess to sum it up, I want to make a Norton Ghost Boot CD that gets the image from an external USB or Friewire device.

Ghost 2003 can make the image and boot files and burn it directly to your CDRW drive IF your CDRW drive is supported. No need for usb support, Nero or a floppy either.

During the Ghost image creation procedure, follow these steps to configure Ghost to create a bootable CD:
1. Click 'Yes' when prompted to make the disk bootable.
2. If prompted, insert a floppy disk that has the appropriate CD-R/RW drivers. For Norton Ghost 2003, the floppy boot disk is not necessary because the boot system files are stored in the Virtual Boot Partition.

I guess I did not give the right info as to why I want the boot CD and the image to not be one and the same.
I am planing on a weekly backup of the whole laptop. it is a 40 GB drive and I am using about 12 or 13 GB already. so I would be backing up about 13GB every week. I am going with that would be up costing way to much in CDs. so I was just wanting to go with havnig a week or two backup on the Portable HDD. I would mean without having a floppy drive I would need to have a boot CD to run a ghosting if I was not able to get into windows.
that would be why I want the boot CD with the USB/Firewire support.

well I guess I have to have a go at this thing, but feel free to help. lol
so I am starting with an NTFS boot cd image from http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm
then I am going to add the support files that run in DOS that Norton Gost has on the CD and it told to add to a boot disk.
but think I still do not have the USB/Firewire stuff. can any one help with what I need to add to have that or have I got it now.
well its only a CD-R so I will have a good at this a report back.

Well, if all you want to do is regular backup images to the ext hdd, then why not just initiate ghost from within windows itself? Ghost 2003 will do this. You launch the full blows ghost program from within windows, tell it what you want to do, ghost creates a temporary virtual partition & reboots your computer into dos & ghost.exe and then you run it. No need for a boot cd then.

I would be planing on doing backups that way yes. but if I can't get into windows for some reason what am I to do then???? no floppy drive and the ghost CD itself is not a boot CD so??????
I am just trying to think ahead for a time when something craps out on me and I need to fix it.
