XP (all versions) use accounts to set up security. To enable sharing, the active account on one system must exist on the other. That is, if John/password is logged into Computer A, the account John/password must exist on Computer B. That account (on Computer B) doesn't have to be logged into, just in existence.

XP will use the local account to authenticate the user from the other computer. You can also enable the Guest account, but this is highly, highly, highly not recommended. (Did I say, highly not recommended?)

By the way, don't forget to share in the first place.
