Ethernet Card Duplex Settings...What should they be?

Post by Capitalizt »

Hi folks...I have a Realtek8139 fast ethernet NIC card. I am getting approximately 3.3mbps/200kbps in speed tests. My advertised speeds are 4mbps/250kbps and I was wondering if any settings for the NIC could be changed to improve performance?

In NIC properties, I chose "advanced", and am given a "link speed duplex mode" option menu. I have several options. It is currently set to "Auto Negotiation" but I also have options of 100mbps/full duplex 100mbps/half duplex 10mbps/full, or 10mbps/half. Would one of these options be a better choice for a cable setup?

If you are connecting directly to the modem, it is usually 10MB FDX. (Check the modem specs). If you are connecting to a router or a switch, set it to 100MB FDX.

What most folks don't know is how Windows handles auto mode. Every time it makes a new connection, it sends both types of packets (10 and 100). Also, if you have any other protocols installed, it sends those too. The packet that responds first is the winning packet. This would normally be the 100, but not always.

Force the issue.
