A huge loss to the sport of racing. The entire race family, from Indy to F1, to CART, to anything that goes fast on 4 wheels is effected by this trageic loss.

It's ironic as NASCAR, and all forms of motorsports, is in what is considered as its safest ever, engineering wise, and here in the last 5 years we have lost way, way too many drivers AND fans in all forms of the sport.

If you had watched the race, you would have also seen that Tony Stewart's car was not all that far from flying over the fence and into the crowd.

Anytime you deal with these speeds, freaky things happen. Everything is amplified by the speeds that these guys carry and all the engineering in the world cannot predict what can/will happen.

A sad, sad day for the family of racing.

As someone who is from a great racing community, it's sad to see someone of Dale Earnhardts stature and prominence pass into the night. Nascar and racing in general will seem empty without him, but will remember the many things that he brought to the sport.

Well that is a horrible sunday. It hits you square in the nuts when something like that happens. I love Nascar and I admit Mark Martin is who I go for but Dale Earnhardt is the one who brings Entertainment to the Sport. You won't be forgotten. And My Wish Is that You Number will Be retired.
We have seen their kind before. They're the heirs of all the murderous ideologies of the 20th century. By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions, by abandoning every value except the will to power, they follow in the path of fascism, Nazism and totalitarianism. And they will follow that path all the way to where it ends in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies.

It's times like these where we really need to remember who was lost here. First a husband, second a father, third a friend and lastly a racecar driver.

Pray for strength for the family. Fortunately, the racing community is a family oriented sport and they will be very well taken care of and comforted during these times.

Just shows how volatile our lives are. A mere blink of an eye and it's over.

Tell someone you love them tonight.

I feel the worst for his son, seeing him in his rear view mirror, not even realizing he died on impact, terrible. I watched it live and honestly considering the horrid wreck before Dale's, I thought he was fine. As soon as I heard them say he was still in the car, I got worried. Sure enough, my worries came true. We'll miss you Dale, NASCAR will never be the same without you.

Damn...I was watching the last lap (the only part of the race I watched)
Lo and behold theres a wreck at the very end. I figured whoever got into the accident would walk out with a few scrapes and bruises....
Thats messed up...on the last lap too.
