Never thought I be taking Zoloft

Post by Ghosthunter »

but after a few weeks in therapy she referred me to a psychiatrist.

OCD is suppose to be one of the easiest mental disorders to treat with medicine..not sure if true or not. I am not going to go into what my OCD is all about, way too personal, but I realize that majority of it is causing a lot of marital issues that is why i went for help.

I been reading all the pros/cons about taking an antidepressant and now reading all that is making me more nervous.

I just never thought I be taking medicine, I was always against it for the longest time.

P.S. If i start saying some whacked things..then it probably the medicine..lol

You'd be very surprised to find out how many people do have a chemical imbalance. Some don't even know it.

Up until about 4 months ago I was taking Zoloft. I had been prescribed the medication about 3 years ago. I don't know how long they want you to take it, but new studies advise it isn't for prolonged use. (now they tell me). It began to cause worse problems than what was supposed to be treating. I have since been prescribed a new medication.

Stay in close contact with your doctor and report any side effects.

It's a good site. I wasn't thinking strictly of depression being the result of a chemical imbalance but certainly the most prominent with all its attendant symptoms.

One thing is for sure. Most of us have gone places in our life we would be too kind to send others. It is dealing with these places that isolates us from others. We just don't think they would understand us, so we keep it in our own special place, while craving the affection from others we are too afraid to ask for.

hey, we're human. complex, sometimes unreachable thinking machines whose one major psychological need is to connect with others. Pity the ones who can't connect with others, no matter how hard they try. And pity more, those who can't reach out and help the former.

Not sure for OCD. First I guess I have to see if it works and if it does I dont know how long I have to be on.

Well i took my first pill last night, was all nervous and everything but so far no major side effects to report, just a little drowsy but nothing out of the norm.

Yeah doctors dont know if mine is being caused by imbalance or a combination.

I think it is a combo..only because my Mom has OCD as well, and other mental disorders in the family history and I seem to inherit everything else bad..LOL

GH, I don't have any advice to give, since I'm not in your situation, but you know you have a family here to lean on. Even if we don't see eye-to-eye on some things. Above all, we're here to help and support.

GH, we dont talk much but just so you know, I was on Zoloft for 5+ years and still to this day have a bad imbalance of seratonin uptake, its in my whole family (who while being very physically fit and nice bodies, are maniac's inside). IF you ever want to ask a question about the med, trust me I'd know all the side effects in and out and would be happy to help.

Ghost, wee96 and downhill,

Thanks for the support.

To be honest at first I was not going to post this, due to embarassment...but then decided I bet many others were in same situation.

Its not abnormal, doesnt make you a "loser", and just like antibiotics are taken for infections, this well, in a sense is somewhat the samething. Your brain, weither due to stress (being my main problem lately), family problems, etc, it can make some people start to produce less uptake of certain chemicals in the brain that are required for "good mood". Learning to overcome your fears (whatever you have, we all do) is the worst part of it. Pills are used to HELP your own body get back in synch. Or if you suck like me, youll basically need something forever and hey I dont have a problem with it. I think I said this before but dont you dare let those people who think you can cure it simply by meditiating, yoga, or any of those (while respected) are obsured to me.

My doc put me on wellbutrin to help quit smoking. Turned me into a zombie. Awful nightmares/terrors. Quit takin that funny pill real quick. She tried to put me on another mood altering drug when my ulcer decided to act a fool, again I quit that silliness quickly.

It's treatable

Post by VIKTOR2020 »

Congratulations on being willing to try something that might make life more tolerable for you (and your missus); it takes guts to do it.
You might want to check out a really good web site run by the OC Foundation. They're a consortium of professionals and patients who join to make the best treatments available to everybody. http://www.ocfoundation.org/index.html

Thanks for that!!

Yep the truth is until recently I did not realize I had OCD and it was treatable with medicine. I been looking for a messageboard that specializes in OCD maybe I will find it on that link. Thanks

I got a question if anyone can answer

So far I have not had any major side effects except for losing sex drive ( I can live with that)

I am more worried about major issues...if I have not seen them yet, does that mean I am fine? Or can the problem show up later on? Right now my dosage has been increased to 50 MG, and so far nothing major. I have heard all horrible nightmares of this happening and that happening...I know I am being overly worried probably for nothing..thus why I am taking it in the first place lol

Most side effects show up early and diminish as your body becomes accustomed to the medication, so the fact that you haven't had them likely means you won't. You're exactly right about worrying about effects being connected with OCD; the disorder almost protects itself from being cured!
Be sure to check out the cognitive-behavioral treatments that work well with medication to eliminate most of the problem. You'll find them described on the OC Foundation I told you about.
Best to you.
