QuakeCon2000 Pictures Up Again!

Post by Brent »

And I added lots more, there are 48 QuakeCon2000 pictures up right here: http://www.coremeltdown.com/quakecon/

If some of them seem like there are not many people and computers around that's because I took a lot of pictures on the Last Day when everybody was packing up and leaving, I stayed for a while while most of the people were gone.

This says it all, just read this page: http://www.coremeltdown.com/quakecon/

have fun, hope you can make it out to QuakeCon2001 this summer

The BYOC area (Bring your own computer) had 1000+ pc's in there, you can't tell it from the pics because they are limited in the view, and I don't have a panorama of the place. It's like this, it's at a Hotel in Mesquite, TX and it just happens to be that this hotel has a convention center, and it's HUGE. Maybe about half a football field, there were 1,000 people with computers in that area, it's a huge warehouse, air conditioned of course and lighted, it's one of the biggest organized LAN's in the World.

For contrast The CPL event in December had 650 computers in the BYOC area, The CPL is like the second biggest organized event behind QuakeCon.

It's increadible, just imagine 1,000+ people all connected on a 100Mb TX LAN all sharing files (lots of warez, anything you want) and all playing against each other in various games, Half Life's stuff, Q3, UT etc...

It's huge and just a great experience, once you go to QuakeCon all other LAN partys seem small

Yes people bring their own computers, that's the point ;)

There were people there that were like yelling, Hey (insert computer name here) we want your Porn!!!! It was hillarious

At QuakeCon2000 there was NOT an Internet connection for everyone because they only had an ADSL line for one row of computers that people that owned websites used if they need to make news posts or upload pictures and live coverage at QC

Who knows this time if we will have an I-Net connection or not, details haven't been released yet. But with a LAN that big it feels like you are on the Internet, hehe, you open up Network Neighborhood and a thousdand computers are listed with people sharing out their drives or folders, hehe.

As for the quality of those photos, some of those were taken with my dinky digital camera which does not have flash. Others were taken by other people at QuakeCon, people take pictures and then put them on the LAN FTP so other people can view them and download them, so I grabbed as much as I could while I was there.

John isn't in any of them because he wasn't here for QC2K but hopefully he will make it out to QuakeCon2k1. I am also not in any of those pictures, I have no clue who that guy is with the mousepad, it's just one of the many pics I found while at quakecon and stole it, hehe.

All during the time that you are there in the BYOC they keep the lights turned down so it's darker, adds mood to the whole area and you can see your screen better and it's just a hella fun event.

People stayed all night there, either they had a room in the hotel or they just stayed up at their computer all night long, it's on going never closes, starts usually on a Thursday and ends on Sunday and during that whole time it never closes so people are there literally 4 days straight! People sleep and eat at their computers, living at their computers there for 4 days, now that's hardcore, hehe.

It's just so fun, you have to experience it in person

sounds like a blast but what about pc security? do machines get stripped? stolen all together? how bout file security? Anyone pop up with any bad virus' there? also do they have a way to get the person? Just seems kinda risky havin that many people who do this all the time that interconnected without any security. or is everyone pretty honest? Anyway, I hope I can make it. Is there an official website?

Oh I forgot to add there is more then just the BYOC area, right beside that is the Exhabition Area where they show off all the brand new games and console systems and even some hardware, Nvidia was there, AMD was there, MAC was there, Sega, Sony, Game companys showing off games like Elite Force, Return to Wolentstien, Q3 on the Dreamcast, they had the pretty G4 Cube's there (they make nice tissue dispensors) they had Q3 on huge LCD screens with couches you could play on. So showing off all the new games and hardware is another aspect.

THEN the other main thing with QuakeCon is the Tournement, 512 Player elimnation, winner gets one of the Tournement machines, money, plaque award thing, and hardware. There is first, second and third places, that's hella fun to sit around the tournement area and watch the Pro's play Q3, hehe, people of all ages can play in it. But you have to sign up for it cause obviously seats are limited, it's usually played on the fastest machines at the time, and last summer that was Athlon 1Ghz machines with 256MB ram and SCSI 160 Drives and GeForce 2's, very nice.

There is always a lot of press there, TV crews, reporters, website people, you usually meet someone famouse from some website there.

And the Other part is the Workshops, they have gaming workshops on how to make map leves, design, sound, whatever!

So 4 parts

BYOC
Exhibition
Tournemnt
Workshops

there is always something to do ;)

JD..

I've been to quite a few Lan parties... Large scale, with a few hundred people at each.

The general view on security, is basic.

If someone is caught stealing something, people will beat their ass. And then turn them into the police/and or boot them out of the event.

Since the people who go are typically in this for fun, you won't run into that.

LANs are extremely cool to go to... You meet a lot of really cool people, over just a few hours, and the best part, you get to own them at all their favorite games! Heh.

I especially like LANs, because I can go and advertise the crap out of myself to computer geeks like myself, so I get more and more word of mouth advertisement going for me. =)

I'm unsure if I will be able to make it to QCon2k1... I have a lot of stuff going on this year, but if the job permits, I will most likely go with my laptop. (very minimal)

My offer that I made a while back for a carpool still stands.

Security is one of the most important aspects there, this is an ORGANIZED event, VERY organized. There are Mesquite Police officers there 24/7, plus hotel security. Every time you enter the BYOC area and you are carrying a bag the police officer checks it's contents, makes sure you aren't running off with any thing stolen. The check in and check out is very strict, you report in with your hardware and they have a list of what you bring in and when you leave the last day they check that list and make sure you only leave with what you came with. This last time at QuakeCon2000 not ONE thing was stolen, there were NO incidences, nothing was lost or stolen. It's safe to leave your computer in there and leave. There is only one entrace into the BYOC area and there is a police officer there 24/7.

As for the Virus thing, that part isn't guarded against, it's up to you to have Virus software on YOUR computer if you are worried about a virus. Getting a Virus is a very real possibility, so have some kind of protection, Norton or McAfee etc...

And also don't share what you don't want people to gain access to! It's a simple Workgroup setup, so everyone can gain access to your computer if you share out your C:\ drive, so set a password or share out only the folders you want to share. Or best thing to have is a seperate hard drive for all the stuff you want to share to people and just share that second hard drive, not your main C:\ drive.

This is the QuakeCon2000 website: http://www.quakecon.net/

As QuakeCon2001 approaches it will be changed to show 2001 info and stuff, it's just too early right now

they play counterstrike at quakecon too

lots of games, people run their own servers in the byoc area for different games

the neat part about playing like that is like if you frag someone really good you can like scream out their name they are using and say like "hahahah (insert name here) I fragged your ass!" it's funny

HEy Brent,
How far away do ppl come from? And...are ppl aloud to run dos (denial of service) Like to boot someone off the network. And how fast was the network running @? Did u have like HUGE mega servers? how many? I am not that great w/ networks. I got a parell port phone-line thing from intel for my network. Does everyone get assigned there own ip's and stuff. And does everyone's lan adapter have to be compatable w/ everyone elses?

Lots of questions you have, i will try to answer:

People come from all over the world, Literally. A lot of people obviously are from Texas, for obvious reasons. But there are people that travel from different countrys for QuakeCon, some are professional Tournement players from other countrys and they come to play in the Tournement. Since it's at a Hotel lots of people just get a room there and stay there, it's a very nice hotel.

There aren't any rules as to what you can't do with your computer, so if someone wanted to be mean they could boot you. BUT your friends or the other people there would go kick their ass cause that's not a very nice thing to do!

The network was running at a Full 100Mbps Full Duplex through Cat5 Ethernet Cables connected to fast Linksys Switches. Linksys sponsored all the networking hardware that runs QuakeCon.

Yes there are Huge Mega servers that run all the Quake3 games for people to play on, In those pictures I have at QuakeCon it's the ones that say "AMD Free for all Servers" they big tall green glowing ones. There are 2 of those huge servers in the BYOC area, and 1 for the Tournement area, they are racked servers. Lots in one cabinet.

If you are going to attend QuakeCon you will need an Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) with an RJ45 port, it can be 10Mbps or 100Mbps full or half duplex because the Switches autosence the speed, for the fastest speed possible get 100TX which is 100Mbps and Full Duplex PCI NIC. You NEED this or else you won't be able to get on the LAN. You have to have your own, they don't give any out.

Yes everybody is asigned a Static IP. When you come in for the first time they print you out a copy of all the Network Settings you have to enter to gain LAN access, the Gateway and IP and Subnet. And if there is Internet access DNS.

You can use any brand/model of NIC you want, it don't matter, just make sure it's PCI and 100TX.

Remember though that was last at last QuakeCon2000 this next one, QuakeCon2001 details may be different, I don't know yet because they haven't released anything on it yet, it's too early.

LANs rule for the ONE reason Brent said...

When you OWN someone, you scream at the top of your lungs, drunken sounding... "Athloni, I JUST OWNED YOU BOY!" Or something similar...

A cool thing that makes QuakeCon unique, are the seminars they hold... John Carmack will teach you a lot about physics of game engines, or someone will teach you how to use 3D Studio Max... It is really worth it to go!

Yeup Omnipressive hit the nail on the head

The workshops are pretty neat, there are lots of famous people there, John Carmack of ID software will give workshops and other game developers as well. Mod people will be there and can teach you everything you want to know about creating mod's for Q3. There is always something to do at QuakeCon, I can only imagine that QuakeCon2k1 will be even bigger.
