a memory & vid card question from a noobie like me

hey peoples,

just wondering does ddr2 memory fit in ddr slots?? is there much difference??

and pci-x vid cards fit in wat slot, cause the really tiny slot looks a bit small for a vid card to fit in. do they have like geforce 6800's in pcix, and is there much diff in the pcix and agp???

Is your motherboard a PCI Express motherboard? A pci-x card won't work in an atx motherboard if that is what you are looking at.

You need a PCI-Express motherboard to accomodate PCI-Express video cards.

Motherboards with standard AGP only slots will not accomodate a PCI-Express video card. Just like the old PCI based video cards, it's a whole different bus.

BTW, ATX if a form factor, irrelevant if it's PCI, AGP, or PCI-Express....they can all be ATX.

Yeah, I know I was just trying to think of a simple way to differentiate the two.

Since most of todays motherboards are referred to as AT, baby AT, micro AT etc. What would you call a non PCI express mother board?

AT motherboards used to be more common in pre-pentium, and carried on into early pentium days on super cheap budget boards. Serial mouse, that huge DIN motherboard connection.

ATX AGP I guess...although probably just AGP since we don't really have to differentiate a new form factor "yet"...as ATX is still the dominant one. Cubes seem to mostly run on either custom mobo's, or micro-ATX, perhaps if the new ITX form factor catches on...

AGP, PCI ? Maybe I'll just refer to them as non-PCI express.
I guess there are motherboards out there with all of the above.

andrew87 also asked about DDR2, I don't know, but I don't think DDR2 will work in a DDR slot. I'm still in the dark ages running PC133.

different technology, but I don't know off hand what is and how it works different

besides DDR2 = 240pin
while DDR(1)= 184pin
