What the HECK
What the HECK
Okay, so I got my new 9600XT.
Uninstal the Nvidia and turn off PC. Install a whole bunch of junk(case, psu, hs, etc, and video card) then turn it back on. Get the drivers installed and I go to play a game, about .5 seconds after the game starts it freezes. I press ctrl+alt+del a few times and I get it to work but VPU recovery kicks on.
I downloaded the new drivers from ATI.com, installed them and it worked, or so I thought. I was playing my games and all of the sudden it just starts to freeze, the whole system that is. Then, if I leave it there, the whole screen will fill with this like funky looking pattern that just sits there.
Does anyone have any idea what's up with that? Do you think a reformat might fix it?
I'm freaking out man!

My preference....switching an entire vid card type like that (nVidia to ATI, or visa versa)...yeah, I'd format and do a fresh install.
Some people get by without doing so. Many get glitches, some don't get glitches. Depends on a LOT of variables which naturally will vary from user to user. History of the existing OS install, what ELSE was installed over time for prior vid card drivers, etc etc.
If you can't do a format and fresh install, perhaps try more thoroughly removing all prior vid card drivers, using something like Detonator Destroyer or other utilities out there which will more fully remove prior traces of drivers. Updated your motherboard chipset drivers to the very latest after that...don't install all that "stuff" that came with your vid card, and just install the latest CATs with it.
But honestly, I'd go for a format and fresh install.

A must have! Download it and love it.
Clean my drivers out please!

I formated today, make sure everything was out.
Seems to be working fine.
What's the avarage full load tempurature for a video card? I generally stay about 55/56 C. Is that really bad? 9600XT
Anyways, so far I'm loving it. I can play my games with almost everything maxed out, on a lot totally maxedout.

So.
I'll be playing a game any my PC will just lock up. My screen just goes blank, the monitor goes into standby, but the keyboard lights(num lock, etc) are still lit up, but I can't change them. So, my whole thing just locks up.
Why is this? Ticks me off. I get this new PSU, supposidly decent, nice video card and I have this junk.
Also, what is the normal temp for a video card?

So, you search google for '9600xt problems' and what do most of the answers you get include?
The KT400 chipset!
Do you know what I have?
The KT400 chipset!
Anyways, a lot of people say they fix their problems by setting the AGP to 4x. They also say if you put two identical PCs next to each other only one using 4x and one 8x you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
I've got mine set to 4x and so far no problems. I'm hopping to have it totally stable so I can see some of the OCing capabilities. It was crashing at stock so we wouldn't get very far OCing, now would we.

People said that didn't fix it.lansens wrote:Did you search for updated chipset drivers?
Here's the odd thing. When I had my MX200 in there I could change the AGP slot speed. 1/2, 4/8, etc. Now it's just stuck at 4.
Everything in windows said it was in 8x, too.
Odd.
If it works at 4x, don't try and change it, or so I hear. No difference in speed and you['ll save yourself a lot of headaches.

But I do have the updated drivers, I was just telling you not only what I have but what they say. Besides, my BIOS, like I said, is stuck at 4x for some odd reason...

I have current BIOS. I checked the event log before I switched to 4x and it didn't say anything. Whenever I had VPU recovery enabled it would kick on after it got stuck, even though it was at stock speeds.
All is well in the world now - at 4x I haven't had any problems. I want a new mobo anyways, so.
