Please help, Connectivity Issues

Post by typeVR6 »

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

For the past 2 days, my connection has degrated miserably. Browsing, at times, comes to a complete halt. If not a halt, its very, very slow. While playing online games, I get a lot of packet loss.

Originally, when I installed XP Prof months ago, I had followed the tweaks posted on this site as well as others. I have had no issues for months. I have made no hw changes nor software. My ISP is Rogers [cable], using a Webstar Docsis Modem as well as a SMC Router.

In an attempt to resolve the issue, I've connected straight to the Modem with no such luck. I've changed the eth cable, uninstalled - re installed my nic drivers [onboard, a7n8x-x]. Power cycled the Modem and Router numerous times.

Support could not find any issues with the service in my area or with my modem specifically. They claim to see packet loss on my PC - which is why they refuse to send a tech. They have also suggested it may be a virus or a 3rd party app in the background hogging up all the bandwidth. 1 - I do not use peer to peer apps, 2 - I have no virus, 3 - I bring my tower to work most of the time and experience no issues here on the network. I am able to browse, download/upload, play games [only when Im done my work and am bored :) ] without any issues. I refuse to believe their suggestions/opinions.

I've inspected the cable feed coming to the Modem, its perfectly fine and has not been tampered with at all. Unfortunately, I am not able to switch over to DSL Ultra as it is not offered in my Buildings. So you see, this is quite the dilemma.

Again, any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding McCoffee. Now I am not at home, however, I did perform a few Tracert's - they tend to be failing around the 9th/10th hop. In between, there is quite a delay to reach the hops. As for installing rams, no sir, no ram has been installed recently.

So you're suggesting the problem IS with the ISP?

It has to be with the isp or something on route due to the 9th tenth hop if it was your first hop then it would be something on ur end.

McCoffee, well I'm home now and guess what? Everything is back to normal - absolutely on its own. Any ideas?
