Running Windows Updates on Networks
Is there a way to set some kind of software up to monitor PC's on a network so I would know when a computer is in need of a critical update or driver update?

What is that link supposed to show? The page just continues to flash and doesnt do anything.
thats strange.. link works fine from my end.
Its Microsoft's SUS server. (Software Update Service).. its free you just have to install it on a Microsoft server OS that has IIS enabled and you can use it to push updates down to all client PC's on the network.
Just google "Microsoft SUS" and its the first link.

Nothing will work for Windows 98 because Microsoft is no longer offering continued public updates via Windows Update. Yes you can download existing ones and install those, but there will be nothing new publically released.
Quoted from Microsoft:
Microsoft will not publicly release security hotfixes for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition. However, customers may request a security hotfix through On-Demand Security Hotfix support, which is offered for these products through June 30, 2006. When a request is received, Microsoft will investigate the issue and try to provide an appropriate response to the customer.
In other words you'll have to get hit with something before they will even help you, which by that time the damage may already be done.
Basically, Windows 98 is beyond its life cycle and this is Bill's way of saying its time to upgrade.

I setup a SUS at my job, works great, thats the only drawback though, won't update 9x and NT clients! But oh well, who the hell cares about those anyways!!
You can try the Baseline Analyzer, which will scan an NT client, but nope, won't do 9x machines!

Does it cause much stress to your network when it does updates?
