I need to know if anyone can help me. I was approached today at work by my supervisor who said that the person who logged on behind me came across a pop up ad for paris hiltons website. Now in the federal gov't this viewing porn can lead to termination. Now I did not view this website and never entered it into the browser to view. my question is how can I prove that I did not type this address into the pc. I think I remember reading somewhere that windows keeps a keystroke loger file somewhere in its programming. does anyone know where this file is and how to access it. Also to do alot of things on it you need to be at admin level access, how do i get around this? any help would be appreciated. Also this machine runs windows 2000 professional. thanks
No keylogger in windows - though you can install them if you choose.
I would tell them that you never knowingly visited any such site (better be true
) and request that they provide all logs and other evidence that would bring them to this conclusion. Play dumb even if you're not. Guilty until proven...if they have logs then...
I would recommend that you go to the page that caused the pop-up and demonstrate in real-time that you didn't try to go there.
To be honest, if a site you were visiting poped Paris video, then you were probably at a site that the gov't wouldn't approve of.
Nothing you do on corporate on gov't equipment is private. They own the equipment so they SHOULD be aware of everything going on - it's responsible systems administration - considering zombie/DoS and similar attacks).

no i never looked at this site or any other. i beleive the problem is that other people use this same puter and they download all kinds of games and crap and this causes pop-ups. as for the key logger, indows doe have a log file hidden somewhere that keeps track of sites, etc that you visit and then reports them abck to microsoft.
Obviously you share this PC with others...
Do you all have individual accounts? Are you logging on a Domain?
If so, the admins may be saying that THAT COMPUTER visited that site. Not so much that YOU visited that site.
If you share a common login, then it's really your word against theirs. If it was a pop-up, there is no way a keylogger is going to help as the address wasn't typed in.
You could ask that they provide a time when the site was accessed and then try to prove that you were not there at the time the site was visited.
Also, I had a popup the other day for the Paris video and not only was it just a green night vision pic of her, it didn't show anything.
Therefore, nothing bad ever happened. The file wasn't downloaded and noone looked at it. What law was broken?
I mean, a popup goes to a predetermined page. If you closed the wndow, you can't do much more. Your case is that you were not the person that opened any sites that would have caused the popup to happen. Therefore, work your case. Make sure that they KNOW you were not on that PC at that time. If you can't prove that, then they can't prove who was at the controls when that site was visited.
Good Luck....
BTW, I know of no keylogger inside Windows. If there was one, Speeduide would have heard about it and would have been hacking the crap out of it. If you insist that there is some form of keylogger that sends the info to M$, I woud suggest contacting Microshaft for assistance..
Then again, the code is probably buggy and they will just find you guilty anyway...
After all, they probably stopped supporting WInXPKeyLogger2000 last month so you would have to upgrade to the 2003 version..

Simply run adaware, spybot, ZoneAlarm, HijackThis, AVG, update windows daily, have a router, don't open e-mail, turn off action scripting, don't use P2P networks, don't violate EULAs, and wear a condom to get Windows secured.

People say Linux is alot of work!
1. Window has NO keylogging program built into it.
2. Windows does not keep track of what you do and then report it back to MS.
3. Windows DOES store browser sessions History in the History folder. You can set how long this data can be stored.
4. Windows caches visited web pages in the Temporary Internet Files Folder. These are retained until you delete them, or until Windows auto deletes them based on local policies and settings.
5. Windows stores cookies handed out by some web sites. These are stored in the Cookies folder. Cookies contain the url of the site that issued it. These are retained until you delete them.
6. The Temp Internet Files folder, History folder and Cookies folder each have a data file named index.dat. Windows uses these files when you surf. If a page is requested by the browser that you have visited previously, Windows will use images and content stored localy rather than re-download content. This speeds up browsing. These index.dat files contain the url of every web site ever visited.
7. There will be cookies, history and temp int files for each user account on the computer.
Your admins can view the index.dat files to see exactly what sites were visited.
If on a local network, your admins can also view logs of which computer connected to another computer.
