High latency problems in Cox NE Kansas.

Post by TeenInternetAddict »

Dear folks,

I have been experincing high latency problems at peak time period for the past month now. In fact, everyone in Topeka been having high latency problems with Cox! No wonder people are switching to DSL faster than anything and I'm going to switch, too, if I find a job next month and pay the $171.06 phone bill and then I can turn on the DSL. And Cox doesn't care and keep giving me BS answers like, "Did you defrag your computer?" "Did you clear your cache, history, and cookies?" Yes, I did all these things and webpages still loading slow. It's not my imagination nor it's the computer! It's nothing on my end, it's on Cox's end. But they keep giving me BS answers, and keep telling to call tech support in Wichita, Kansas and talk to Tier 1, see if they can pass me to Tier 2. I think Cox doesn't care and if they did, this service won't be awful like it is right now. Speeds are slow and webpages are taking forever to load. It's just not one webpage, it's all webpages that's taking forever to load. Forever to load? Instead of 1-2 seconds, now it takes 5 seconds up to 1 minute!

I already tweaked my connection using Cablenut and Mnosteele52's settings, I also used the webpage registry tweaks and it's still loading slow. I think Cox doesn't care and I emailed them around 4pm and I still haven't received a answer yet. I'm paying $39.95 per month for 3000/256 and I'm using a SB3100 cable modem which I already brought from Cox for $29.95. Tweaking won't fix this high latency problems. Besides the high latency issues, there's a ridiculous byte cap of 30gig down and 7.5gig up(preferred - 3000/256) or 50gig down and 12.5gig up(premier - 4000/384). I'm not upgrading to premier for $80, forget it. For $100 per month on DSL, I can have a 6000/512 connection to run a server with. Cox's 4000/384 speed package doesn't allow you to run servers or anything. And 4000/384 doesn't mean crap these days if your latency is high at peak time period. At non peak time period, latency is low again until 7, gets worser around 9 and continue for the next hour or so. I end up shutting the computer down.

I don't know who to turn to. It seems Cox doesn't even care, I have been posting about my slow webpage loading on the DSLR's Cox HSI forum  - and the techs or the users there isn't helping me at all. Or told me it's not a problem with Cox but with the Internet. I guess it must be the Internet everytime my latency goes up  Well, when I wake up in the morning around 5am, my latency returns back to normal. If your Cox HSI is good, I commend you, but my Cox HSI isn't good and after New Years, I'm going to look for a job and see about getting my DSL turned back on. I'm giving Cox 3 months to fix this, if it's not fixed by then, I'm switching to DSL service.

PS. I feel much better now after I vented. If anyone know what I can do, please tell me. I feel like writing to Cox headquarters to get my problems fixed. I don't know what to do anymore.

This is what i would try calling there tech support ask for alternate dns servers settings manually type them in network and dial up connections this should help.

That is deffently a routing issue or threre is to many people using that node. I'm not sure how populated that city is if it is real populated then go back with dsl the promblem with broadband is it all depends on the area and who is in the area.
threre is no way that it isn't.

Mccoffee, maybe you're right. I don't think a alternate DNS server won't work but I'm willingly to try anything, it's the routing. I tried explaining this to Cox tech support and they won't give me any definte answers. To go over the local office, I have to write a letter to Cox coporate headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia to get this fixed. Cox HSI is a good service and I'm sure the networking/data engineers in Atlanta would get this fixed more faster than the local networking/data engineers would. Guess what? Cox keeps showing commericals on tv about every 30 minutes about being 2 times faster than DSL, and the father and son. I'm gonna see if anyone else in town is writting letters to Cox corporate headquarters.
