hi, please help me tweak my DSL :)

Post by 9mmprincess »

ive posted before, in the other forum, but that was when i was on my dinosaur desktop. i just got my laptop back from the shop after being without it for almost two months (oh happy day :) ) and i want to optimize it for DSL.

first off-im with SBC, my plan is sposed to be 384kb down, 128 up. i test it regularly and its usually around 310 down and 190 up.
i called their tech support about my speed and long story short, they said im close enough to the main switching station or whatever to get a better plan-1.5 mb down and i think 384 up. so i called up and they agreed to switch me to the better plan-it is the same price as what im paying now, they said it just was a point of how close you are to the office, whether or not you can get the better plan. this was a week and a half ago, they said my speed would be bumped up by dec 4. well..its dec 3 nothing yet, they said id get a postcard stating its changed, no postcard yet.

hopefully theyre going to do what they said they were going to do.

i did that ping test thing and my result is 67.6-is that good?

my info:
TCP options string = 020405a001010402
MTU = 1480
MTU is optimized for Windows XP PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
MSS = 1440
MSS is optimized for Windows XP PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64800
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64800

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
506880 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
253440 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126720 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63360 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2592 kbps (324 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1036.8 kbps (129.6 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 118 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

thanks for any help :)

ok, its dec 4th, and my speeds havent changed a damn bit. i turned my modem off and back on (unplugged it as well) thats power cycling it right?

im really disappointed-they told me my speed would be bumped up by the 4th-and it hasnt been. i KNEW they were screwing me around man. so now what-i guess i call them up and explain "i signed up for your 1.5 mpb package and i was told it would be up and running by dec4 and that i'd get a postcard notifying me of the change-i got neither the postcard nor the improved speed. so whats up?

i have a feeling theyre going to give me a bunch of excuses :(

change the following in cablenut 192000 that's default recive window.

I would call and ask what's going on with it .,

they said it just was a point of how close you are to the office how far away are you http://www.broadbandreports.com/prequal/distance enter the information and see how far are you.

ok so after they said they had no record of me placing an order, i placed ANOTHER order, for the higher speed, and they said it would be activated by today. and guess what-its not. same old 322 down 213 up. its pretty much always around there.

so NOW what? call them up and ask to talk to a manager? i did that last time and they beat around the bush and wouldnt transfer me to one.

i unplugged my modem for 30 seconds and turned it back on, no difference. is there anything else im supposed to do to make the new speed work? or have they simply screwed me for the second time in two weeks?

Princess... go here, join, and post a message...
SBC Forum

CCCMTech or ADSLGuy, both SBC reps, will then ask you to IM your details to them and they will get to the bottom of it for you. They are very helpful guys. Good luck! ;)

Yes, Doc... it's totally obvious... how could I have missed it!

She has a fundamental issue w/ SBC, her actual speed, and an order that has likely gone amiss in the SBC system. She is getting really frustrated and trying to find a way to contact someone at SBC so she can understand better what's going on.

She's had this issue since Dec 3rd!

I told her how to get in direct contact w/ an SBC forum rep who could help her within a day.

So, it simply becomes this:
Why do you call yourself a doctor, if you are not prepared to help, or let others help? If, after 14 days, you are so wanting that you want to deprive her of other quick sources of info just so you can feel important here on this forum, then say so.

If you want her to get fixed, like all good Doc's really do, then get a life. Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh!

If someone doesn't post for 9 days with results then it a little hard to help. No mind readers here. But I understand, dslr needs you guys to go out and snipe people to replace those they scare off.

If you send someone off to their isp before you help them fix their local issues then what good are you? Your isp is not always at fault for the problems their users see, and they are real willing to charge you for their time. :thumb:

Billusa her issue is with her ISP and nobody else, there is nothing that tweaking or advice will help with. If you would have read some of her other threads you would know this. Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh!

Well excuse me, Dr. Tweak, perhaps you should re-read my post. Sheeeeeesh!

I sent her to the SBC forum, to contact an SBC Rep, who will help her within a day with her SBC ISP acct. Capiche?!?

No... you and Mr. Palmer automatically think someone trying to help is sniping... what an insecure crock! In fact Doc, Mr. Palmer is soooo knowledgable that he wants to keep a-tweaking. So he can't read either.

Perhaps you should tell Mr. Palmer that's he's up a tree and "...her issue is with her ISP and nobody else."

If all the other audiophile, car, PC and even DLSR forums gave such paranoid replies to helpers as what I have just seen here after only 2 posts, then all I can wish you is goooooooood luck.

We have what is called a telephone these days, you pick it up and dial the number to your ISP and then they send a tech out to your house, it's a novel idea.

Your first post here and you direct someone to DSLR and YOU have an attitude????????

Just go back to DSLR like all the others here lately, they can't answer someones questions so they just post a link to DSLR. WHAT GIVES WITH YOU PEOPLE???????????????????

You know, Doc... it's not necessary to shout.

I did provide a helpful answer. And, I'm interested in why you have this big monkey on your back about DSLR and people helping people. You don't address the issue of my helping her by telling her how to directly contact an SBC ISP rep via an SBC approved forum after she has had no luck using the 'novel idea' of a telephone.

She'll find the fix real fast that way Doc. When she could not here. Sorry you can't fathom that and instead attack that forum and me, a newbie user here, instead.

And who are "my people" Doc? What is your problem against people helping people that you keep cutting in to cut down the helper? What did they do to you -- kick you off due to not playing well in the sandbox?

Just call SBC and see if they can uncap your line to 1.5Mbps down. Or see if your line can support 1.5Mbps. If your line can't support 1.5Mbps or you're too far from the CO, you're going to be stuck with 384/256. I know SBC sucks but you have to keep calling them until you find the right person that could help you.

I sometimes wonder if anyone here actually reads all the posts and then thinks before telling someone to 'call' ...after she has explicitly stated had no luck calling.

And, why don't you see how many more you can scare off, Doc, by slamming newbies trying to help in a thread. Well... all I can say is this: she is well on her way now to having her issue solved via a real SBC rep who is going to help her. If it won't make you shrivel up and die, go look for yourself.

I'm gone now... just like her... what a waste of time!

You know's what is really funny bill, your just like the people she called on the phone, your routing here to dslreports then she will have wait about a day or so just to get a reply so on and so on.

We answered the question correctily we didn't get respond back for how far from c.o. call them phone is the same thing a message fourm either way she is get routed and what are they going to say at the fourm anyway oops we screwed up wow the same resault she got on the phone.

We don't goto dslreports fourms and go hey goto speedguide i have debated them in the past , I love people giving tweak advice but what's really funny is they don't read or choose to ingore any white paper in the tweaking fourm or anything technical that involes tunning

i love how the cablenut program is to difficult acording to them to use how hard is it to choose a file that is based off your capps open it up and apply changes and reboot???

Slamming newbs rofl every time i asked or suggested another program in dslreport it get's locked so who's immature or slamming that is so closed minded and rude.

thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! i IMed adsl guy and he imed me back within a couple hours stating that the problem would be fixed today. "ya right" i thought. i checked my speed around 6 pm tonight and im above 1mbps :) i used sbcs speed test, the one at mcaffee, and the one at speakeasy and they all tell me the same thing (and also i can see it with my own eyes as even huge pics are there instantly :D )-ive got my bumped up speed.

mcoffee and others-while i do appreciate you posting and helping me in the past, i dont know why you're jumping down his throat because he posted a link to MY ISP's support forum-that makes no sense to me. the reason i didnt get back to you is because all the tweaks in the world arent going to help me get faster if my cap is still at 384 kbps-i wanted to resolve the issue with my isp before i applied anymore tweaks and i think i even stated as much. bill saw-like hes trying to tell you-that i HAVE called them, numerous times, with no luck at all.

again, thank Bill usa, you totally totally rock, i really appreciate it <3 :)

Our whole point 9mmprincess was that you had an issue with your ISP and only your ISP could solve it. It appears you had dealt with the standard tech support people when calling (morons) and they did not solve your problem. All it would have taken was for you to talk to the right person when you called to have it all straightened out. There was nothing we could do to help, obviously you dealt with someone at DSLR that knew what they were doing which you could have done by calling them. In any case I'm glad things are fixed. :D

The reason I was angry with Billusa is because so many people here lately are directing everyone to DSLR. Like anywhere DSLR has good and bad people, in my opinion the bad far out weigh the good there.

I'm with steele especially lately that's all there has been on this fourm is some people from dslreports been stating mis leading information or opions that are not based on reality. I'm glad it worked out and that's is the beauty of this fourm we have a little more freedom in this fourm then dsl reports for example if someone wanted to use dr tcp here were open to talk about it. If i said cablenut over there thread is locked.

No hard feelings and happy holidays

Too you too. :D

They don't like CableNut and are completely CLUELESS when it comes to the settings in CableNut. CableNut is the most advanced connection tweaking app there is and completely safe and legal. In my opinion they are jealous, they are ignorant of how the registry and all the parameters in CableNut work. They will tell you that it adds useless and harmful registry entries which is a blatant lie, NOBODY there has ever backed up that statement but they all say it. ALL of the settings in CableNut are documented by Microsoft, if you would like to read the definitions they here Windows 2000/XP Definitions. I put that together and it was taken right from the MS TCP/IP White Papers.

Princess... you are more than welcome.. happy holidays to you! ;)

What is totally escaping these guys, in their blind dissing of DSLR, is that the forum you were dealing with there is staffed by SBC Tech support level 2 people. That's who ADSLGuy is. It all becomes more clear... blind rage because another site does not want to recognize one program (cablenut). Ol' Doc even ranted again saying it wasn't going to work. Duuuuuuuh!

Such a misdirected waste of energy... it's sad... and I would never pay a Doc with such a narrow attitude to format anything for me. The last thing I want is someone who is right all the time, as they are too easily blinded to alternate ways of doing things better. Even after your feedback, there is backpedaling like no tomorrow.

I'm very happy it worked out for you and I am glad the SBC guys were able to help!

Now I am forever gone from this waste of time here. Perhaps you will see me over on the dark side... where people act their age and not their mentality.
