Hi all, question from the forum newb.

Post by JTMON »

How's everyone today? I was just wondering what your thoughts are on the ATHLON XP 2500+ 333FSB overclockability with standard factory cooling. I have that processor and the corsair 512 twinx extreme low latency pc3200 running on a7n8x-deluxe. What fun can I have lol?

TIA for the tips!

try and raise the FSB in increments of 5 or so untill it becomes unstable with the stock v-core.

lock the AGP speed to 66 Mhz and check the cpu temps at full load.

i have heard of some people getting nice overclocks with the OEM cooler and not having to raise the v-core much if any to get 2200Mhz.

my xp2500 needs more voltage to get a decent OC though :(

Nah, the value still isn't there for me :) I used to be hard core Intel fan, then someone gave me their 1.4GHz AMD machine and I haven't looked back since.

I saw this posted in another thread as well..the mobos for p4s also cost more. Other than the price of AMD's, I like the performance for that price. Other than that, I couldn't care less, If p4s came down to compete with AMD I'd use both.

You know what you are TOTALLy right... each has their strongpoints... I have bought AMD's and I probably will in the future. It all depends on the mood I'm in I guess.

Sure, a big argument I used to make AGAINST AMD was the fact that they had no overheat protection, but since the mobos do, that's sorta moot. I do like the tiny size of the p4 though.

I'll be buying the same MB for it soon. :D

Yea dude, those temps will kill your processor hella fast...... also you MIGHT be using the wrong sensor in MBM5.... try switching the temp sensor in MBM5.

well, so far I got my multi up to 12.5. The problem is that the bios is the only thing that shows this. XP doesn't show any extra mhz. What's the good program to check these things?

Try CPU-ID

or WCPU-ID

http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-120a.zip

This is what I use.

so I said screw it and clocked my FSB to 200 then set the ram at 80% so it runs at 200 also, don't quite understand that, thought should be equal if both at 200. Anyways, stable so far, chip's reading as a 3200+ now, Sisoft scores are up, some off the chart, I can't believe how easy that was. Temps good so far, hanging at 40-41 after/during sisoft. Will play some games and check again.

jesus.

did you look at some of the amd over clocks?

i saw the intel 5ghz one. nice.

but i was lookin at some of the amd ones and i dont kno if this is accurate but i did this.

2500/1833 = 1.36388 ... well i then took the mhz that i saw on the site 3257x 1.36388... (being their both 2500+ and ones oc.) i figured it would match the rated speed.
i came out with 4442
in other words a 3.25ghz running at 4.44 ghz speeds.

thats what i got out of it in my eyes.

if thats true those are some damn insane oc's for the barton.

this was also using the ln2 cooling.. what is this is this some sort of refidgrent? like the ac in the car?

Why are you dividing 2500/1833

Its a 1.83ghz cpu at 3.2.

LN2 = Liquid Nitrogen

I let it run all night with no issues, rebooted in the morning and it lagged out totally, reset the settings in the bios, still running at 2.2GHz but bumped the core voltage 1 setting to 1.675. Played some games, temp stayed around 47C...

damnit, it won't let me go anything above 200 FSB, even bumping the DDR voltage slightly didn't work. I know it can go faster, maybe I should have got the 3500 corsair lol...where's mytflyguy?

Shall I try 2.7? 2.8? Also, should change the mem timings to get it higher? I have the 3200 LL corsair.

it is one thing to have it boot up to windows, quite another thing to have it run stable.
i would run memtest86 from a floppy to see if the memory is going to flake out on ya.
then run prime95 over nite after that.

just watch the temps when running prime to make sure they don't get too high.

i wish my asus board would go that high, my old revision will not run totaly stable over around 194FSB.
