True Type Fonts in OS-X??

Post by Blisster »

Anybody know how I can get OS-X to recognize True Type fonts? Or perhaps some sort of converter? We have an in-house font that is in the True-Type format, and the designers here need to be able to use it on there MAC's. However when I dropped the font into the fonts folder and rebooted the machine, none of the applicatiosn can see the font.

Any suggestions would rock!

Are you installing them to System | Library | Fonts folder? That gives access to every user on that computer. You can also install them to Macintosh HD | Users | <username> | Library | Fonts for individual user use.

Using TrueType fonts in OSX require no conversion.

yes, system|Library|fonts folder.

for some reason, none of the applications (Adobe/Office) lists the font as an option....

I'm stumped.

I just did a little search for you...
You may need to remove the three-letter extensions from some font names so OS X can recognize them. Unlike the classic Mac OS, OS X identifies file types by extension name. If a font has an extension that's unfamiliar to OS X or one that identifies a different file type, OS X may not recognize it. For example, the fonts included with Deneba's Canvas 8 have .ttf appended to their names (BerliTBol.ttf, for example). Until you remove .ttf from the fonts' names, OS X refuses to acknowledge them.

Just try deleting the .ttf extension and see if that fixes your problem :)

Hope it works

Shouldn't make a difference. Prior to OS X, TrueType fonts where fully supported in MacOS 9 and fully supported in OS X as well, even while running MacOS 9 in Classic Mode. Have you guys done anything manually with deleting fonts from the Library, whether it's the System Library or the User Library -- that can sometimes corrupt the font suitcase?

Like the quote says, OSX treats files differently. It states that previous MAC OSs didn't have this issue, but with OSX it needs to be done :)

Copying TrueType fonts with the .TTF fonts into OSX work with or without the extension. Both methods work flawlessly on two of my OS X boxes, one running Panther and the other running Jaguar.

There is something more in this case that is causing his problem and more than just a simple extension problem.

You're probably right... removing the extensions is still worth trying though.
