Anyone help me(router)

Post by code631 »

we have 6 people sharing cable connection with 2M bandwidth by one router and one hub. Everything is ok except for counterstrike and warcraft. Very bad ping when I tried to connect to local CS servers(above 500ms) and lag when playing warcraft. I tried to use DMZ, no use. When I connect the pc to the cable modem directly it's ok. I am sure the bandwidth is enough and my pc is pluged on the router. Anyone pls help me. Thanks.

The more users you have the more latency you have You could try subnetting that should have to computer in the 255.255.255.xx xx is any number and put the other two to three on another subnet for ex first two comps let's call it netwok a.

A should be 255.255.255.1
Netwok b is 255.255.255.2

http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=177 this guide should show you how to the manuals and subents but use my tip.

If you spilt the subnets you getting less broadcast which means more badwith.

thanx for your idea, i will try it tonite. Something interesting is that one of my friends live nearby my house is doing the same way, they have no problems when playing counterstrike or warcraft. I am not sure about what router he is using, but I did see the configuration of his router and it's exactly the same as mine.

maybe try upgrading firmware on the router but most lag is isp/cable line related it's odd if the router is off the lag is not there but, those subneting should help.

I went through the article but still don't have a clue of how to set 2 subnet on one router. Are the masks set on clients or router? I read the manual and only one subnet mask can be set on it.

I think I would lose the hub and add a switch. You will allways have lag on a hub with more than one computer running through it when you try to play online games.

Using a router for gaming with more than one computer is shaky at best.

There is only one downstream queue for all the computers. You must insure that the RWIN on each computer is set to the minimum value, which is:

rated speed in bits x latency /8 (to convert bits to bytes.)

You may need to set an even smaller RWIN.

I'm not sure that you can force Windows XP to use an RWIN other than what it chooses automatically.

The problem is that packets are accumulating ahead of the slowest link in the system which is the downstream path from the CMTS to the cable modem.

If the games use the UDP protocol you are stuck unless you can regulate the speed on the server end.
