Good cable modems???

Post by cpharrboy »

Im getting ready to buy a new cable modem because the one I have now is ancient. Its a Motorola Surfboard 3100. It reboots randomly all the time and is in general a POS. I was looking at the Motorola SB 5100 and the Linksys BEFCMU10 ver.2 EtherFast Cable Modem with USB & Ethernet Connection. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which one would be best or if there is another I didnt list that is best? Im gonna be getting it from NewEgg so they have lots of different ones to choose from. I called the crappy cable company and asked if it would be ok and they said yes. They first tried to tell me that they would replace my old one with another 3100 and I said no, I dont want the old trash.

Im just curious.....Is that the one you use? Also, what is the software it comes with used for? Are there particular things you can do with your cable modem using the software?

No it's not the one I use, I have had mine for years. If I bought a new one this would be it, as for software, none needed.

I figured I wouldnt "need" the software. I was just curious what the software was for that it comes with. On the site it says it comes with some kind of software for the modem so I assumed there was some use for it. Mine is just notorious for rebooting whenever it wants. It does it anytime I download something that hovers around 1.2 to 1.4 megabits in speed. Like its choking or something. I dont know. I do know Ive called the cable company about that and they said that I am guaranteed 1.5mbits max and that it shouldnt crap out at any speed.

The 5100 is a great modem. I also like the linksys, I have hooked many up with no problems ever. Both are a great choice. :)

The software that comes with the modem is the drivers for usb.

Good deal.......Ill just buy the motorola since it seems to be the most advanced with the newest technologies. I think its the cheaper of the two also.
