playing games without cd

Post by m4a2t0t »

I am building the computers and networking for a PC gaming store and I dont want to have a bunch of kids handling the CD's and possibly break or scratch them. I know it is possible to do this but I dont know where to start looking. The games will range from CS to everquest, all computers are XP and there is a 2K server DC with a 2K gaming server. I would also like to do this so I can remove the CDROM's so I can limit possible exposures to viruses and save a few bucks to spend on upgrading components.

I use Farstone's Virtual Drive 7. I have a partition with all my game roms loaded as VCD and when i click the shortcut to the game i want it just runs. You can set cache speed and all sorts of stuff. Works flawless. Also they have Game Drive which is specificly for games. Don't know what the difference is.

I really need to be able to install the image on a server instead of the local computer because the PC's have the 36GB raptor drives and I dont know how many games Ill be installing over time.

edit: I just saw their CDserver, I'll look into that more.

more sugggestions welcome

thanks

It may be doable with the network virtual drive server.

I use Farstone'z "GameDrive" version, built especially for games. It's always updating it's compatibility with newer games, i.e. started with v7.03 now updated to v7.12. Always been able to support all my updated versions of BF42 (some ppl had problems with similiar virtual drive proggy's), UT2k3, GhostRecon, MOHAA, and other popular games. The greatest thing is it only cost me $18USD, really cheap for a great prog.

Check out GameDrive'z Game Compatibility Database

i use DAEMON tools to mount my game CD's, works great for me.

i think alcohol 120% allows more virtual drives though.
