Got new 2MBps upgrade! Woo Hoo! Now some questions.

Post by magnius »

Hello. I just got my service upgraded to 2MBps. I ran several speed tests and I am getting every ounce of it! Most recent test at "Testmy" said 2128KBps! Cool!

Anyway, I had used the speedguide TCP/IP Optimizer before when I had the 1.5MBps connection and was wondering do the values set by the TCP/IP Opimizer work for my new 2MBps connection? Things like the 1500MTU? Should the MTU be set to 2000 now?

Also does anyone know of a safe, secure place I can test my file transfer rate?
I know that downloads start out fast and come down and level out. Like with my 1.5 meg. connection I would start out at 300 or 400 and come down to 175 or so.This is normal for that connection speed.
With my new 2 meg connection I start out at about 800 to 900 but I still come down to 175 or so. As I understand this it should level off around 225 to 250 with a 2MBps connection.
I figure either I need to change a setting to accomidate the new 2 meg connection or the site I am downloading from is capped.

So is there a free service somewhere with a high speed or uncapped connection where I can download a generic file or something to test my potential transfer rate?

Thanks!

What is wrong with broadbandreports.com? They have qualified Techs for most ISPs there, and very helpful!

Other then the fact they bash cablenut and speedguide.net without any proof of what there stating about the two sites/two tools. That and i had a heated debate about how cablenut according to them used extra settings when all are in a tcpip white paper. Also i love how they say sg uses way high of rwins those patches are hit or miss. I know alot of people that loved those patches.

I will agree there are good people anywhere but for the most part it has more bad than good people. The "techs" there contradict themselves and each other continuosly and cannot backup what they say. Whenever they are questioned they either edit, delete or lock your thread instead of explaining themselves. They are rude and arrogant and there is no need for that. This is Speedguide so why are you refering people to their site? There are FAR more qualified people here who are glad to help and answer questions accurately that can and will backup what they say.

Because I have been on BBR long enough to know they don't tolerate BS, and their techs are very helpful, you may have ran into bumpy spots there, I have also, but not often, I think both SpeedGuide and BBR are useful to me, I usually get all my knowledge on BBR and spread it to others here on Speed Guide.

Yes I agree it's BS when you ask a direct question and they blantantly ignore you or edit, delete or lock your thread. Way too many contradictions, how do you know what is right or wrong?

The same debate i even sent them to a link to the white papers about extra settings they couldn't answer it. Also it all started cause the kid used the optimizer over dr tcp which both hits the same keys. I think the optimizer may hit some that dr tcp but i could be wrong.

That hasn't happened to me before, if they feel it should be locked, then it is done, I don't have any problems with the Moderators at all, Is that all you are afraid of? :D

Afraid of? What is that supposed to mean? When I ask for an explantion then I expect it, I do not expect to be ignored or mocked. There is absolutely NO consistancy in what is recommended there. They are incorrect about A LOT of things and refuse to listen to reason, they think they are right and everyone else is wrong but refuse to prove their point.

It appears to me that it's not me that is afraid but them, I know what I am talking about and will backup anything I post.

 ;)

That second thread doesn't say anything, now I don't know why it was locked, probably for a good reason but for Cablenut?? NAH! I see it discussed plenty of times.

Well I don't want to defend BBR, but most of the time they are correct, they do it for a reason which keeps BBR friendly, you can also IM the mods to see what's up, Were a little off-topic, so I'll be quiet now. ;)

DSLR is the only place that I can bitch about Charter and feel good about it. When I post something on here about Charter it normally goes unnoticed and falls off the first page with no replies. Everyone has free will. Go where ever you please.

I use TCP Optimizer because the patches work for me. I don't have high latency or lag problems, packet loss, slow speeds, pauses while loading webpages, or anything else those people in the BBR tweaking forum wants you to believe. If you're having problems, it's usually problems on the ISP's end. Maybe they didn't back up their registry. Also they do locked threads or posts if you do mention Cablenut or Tcp Optimizer. The people don't want to listen to new ideas, and are rude and arrogrant. Ok, BBR is good for one thing, you can complain about your ISP, you can review your ISP, also I find out Cox is going to tiering speed packages. But their tweaking method sucks, and that's why I use BBR.

  = for BBR
