Hi. I have a Dell Dimension XPS B733, win 98se, 256M rambus DRAM. I want to upgrade the CPU. Does anyone know what the fastest CPU the motherboard can take, without any modifications? What about putting in some sort of adapter in the socket? I think it is a 370 socket, but I'm not sure. When I put in the service code in at Dell, it shows XPS B___r. I think the r changes the socket, but the invoice does not have the "r", nor is it on the outside of the case. Is there a quick and easy way to find out? I'm not too familiar with all the new socket types. Thanks.

Dell always OEMs most of their periphials in one way or the other. The best way to find out for certain is to contact them. That's what I did on a few Dell systems. Put that award winning service of theirs to use.

Sounds like that box is at the end of its upgrade life.
What you could do though is take the upgrade path to a new box..
Boards Processor and case.
Then move your hard drive, floppy and CD rom over. If the Dell has a vid card take that over also. Then over time upgrade those parts also.
I always upgrade in steps rather than in one big bank bustin swoop.
Or sell the Dell and put it towards a new box..
Otherwise just stay with the 733 and resist putting any new parts in that box
