getting a PS2 - what else do I want?

Post by grundy »

well, our DVD player stopped working, and much to my surprise, my soon-to-be wife said "well, we might as well just get a Playstation - they play DVDs, right?"

So, I'm off to get a playstation. What do I need to play DVDs? Do I just need the remote, or do I need anything else?

What else am I going to want? I'm planning on picking up the PS2, plus a remote, plus a memory card. I'll probably be the only one playing games, so one controller should do it. Are there any other cool extras that I might want? and is an 8mb card sufficient for most games, or would I want more?

You really dont even need a seperate remote but I think its best to have one. I would also spring for some more memory. If ya want to play online with it get the net adapter to go with it. :)

Depends on how many games you are going to get. Also depends on which games. But for normal games an 8 MB card is good for about 5-6 different games. Now if you are into sports games like Madden, NHL, NCAA. Then you'll probably want a memory card for each of them as the Franchise Save alone chews up about 3.5 megs. That doesn't include rosters, settings, rosters, profile, all that stuff eats up space in a hurry.
Respect it.

You don't need a remote to play DVDs, but if you want to use an actual remote as opposed to a controller (which also means a physical connection between the "remote" and the machine), pick one up.

When you get a game, you'll want/need a memory card to save anything. The regular Sony 8 meg cards are usually more than enough unless you're planning on using stuff like the franchise modes in sports games.

I'd also recommend buying it at a place like EB Games that has an extended warranty, as PS2s tend to die (often). Thankfully, I'm on my first one (although it does act up), but I know people who are already on their 3rd or 4th machines. You'll know what I mean when you start getting dirty disc errors. ;)

my ex boyfriend had a playstation for a few years, we used it to play DVDs all the time. then it started to crap out and eventually stopped playing a lot of the games. We went to a place that buys back games and we sold back our games and told the guy about the problem with the playstation. He said he sees that problem all the time. He said playing DVDs is one of the worst things u can do to a playstation.

just some advice. playstations are wonderful just giving u a warning.

you'll need an xbox too! :p

j/k BUT the Xbox does play DVD's too, you just need to buy the remote for 25 OR get aa modchip, then it plays DVD's, VCD's SVCD's, MPEGS et. al.

either way, enjoy!
