Is Maxtor a good brand of HD to buy?

I saw a 160 GB Maxtor on sale at staples for around $100+. Is this a good brand? Anyone have any good/bad experience with Maxtors?

Yes Maxtor and Western Digital are both good in my opinion ...

Best way to find out some of this info is goto http://www.newegg.com and look up a product and read the reviews ...

Might even find it cheaper there ..

there are mixed feelings on this board about maxtor, some love them others hate them.

I personally have had two, one for a while, and one I`ve just bought on the strength of not having any problems with the first.

I`ve also had several Seagates and recently I invested (if u can call it that) in an IBM/Hitachi 180GXP which I`m also quite happy with.

So far I haven`t tried Western Digital but that`s not for any particular reason just the way it`s been at the time of my purchase.

Hope this is of some use to ya, but as YoS has said, there are many mixed feelings

I have owned 2. One broke, but rma process was easy and fast, i have another one, with 2 fans on it so no over heating for me...

Maxtor is nice and cheap, especially at staples

I replace more Maxtors than any other brand hard drive (Quantum had that title a few years ago, but Maxtor bought them out....heh, how fitting)

Seagate (Barracuda series)
Western Digital (Caviar and Raptor series)

They are my fave brands, only ones I'll spend money on. IBM was up there too but since they officially had overheating problems, I'm holding out for a bit...although I have near a half dozen of their Deskstars and all are still working fine.

I have had a maxtor and WD and neither have given me problems, both good HD's however if i had to pick i would say WD

I have a 40 gig Quantum, it's about 4 years old, no problems. Just bought an 80 gig Maxtor, I don't expect any problems with it either..

I've never had a problem with a Maxtor in 3 years and 2 dozen computers built. The only WD (40gig, 7200RPM, 8MB buffer) I have is being installed in the computer I'm giving my sister as I don't care for the whine I can hear over the fans (watercooled with the normally 30db fans at half speed on rheostats).

I just bought a new Maxtor with 60GB, 7200RPM and 8MB buffer.

I'd have to agree with the OldStoneCat, I have used a few Maxtors, including both the 2meg and the 8 meg Cache, and I switched to WD on a recommendation and it was well worth it, went from a 80Gig(8Meg)Caviar to a 120Gig(8Meg)Caviar so far and they are beautiful drives, it's WD from here on out..

I have and have bought, quite a few maxtor drives, and have yet to have a problem..with any of them

Maxtor has worked pretty good for me so far..

It's funny how we can all have such different experiences. I have replaced at least 30 WD's, and about 2 Maxtors that I can recall, and they were old. Also had to replace a slew of IBM's as well. Maxtor has been rock solid for me in desktop replacements at clients- I use them almost exclusively for the last 3 years, with no failures.

Go figure.

Yeah, dunno. I mean, literally there's a comma in the amount of Maxtors and Quantums I've thrown out. Dave's World is probably more...as he's worked where I do for substantially longer.

I'm reformatting a Maxtor 10 gigger that crashed for a customer right now as I type this, lets hope it doesn't crash during the OS install. I only order/install Seagate and Western Digital for our customers and very rarely see them fail.

BTW I'm not sure about the price diffrence but if you can swing it , get 2 - 80 Gigs
