Post by mvern2 »

i just got a stick of Hynix 512 mb DDR2100!
coupled with my stick of 256 crutial/micor should be giving me 768mb eh!

no...at first it was only registering 640 mb in the bios....then i switched the RAM in differnet slots....now its only registering the 512 mb in the bios

what could be the prob?

Prolly ea. stick is differently made. Some ram will werk with other (mismatched) 90% of the time you need to get the same brand ram so it'll werk together.

Your BIOS may be outdated on the motherboard so it only recognized individual chips up to a certain size. In other words...a 256 meg stick of RAM can come in a couple of different configurations. A stick with 8x memory chips on one side of the board.....8x 32 meg chips. Or a 256 meg chip with 8x chips on both sides of the board....a total of 16x 16 meg chips.

Add to the above factor...sometimes certain combinations of hardware just dont mix. You may get things to work in odd combatinations 9 times in a row...but that 10th time...odd combinations just wont work. Hence getting same brand RAM specifically tested for and approved for your motherboard is the safest bet (like you can do at http://www.crucial.com) That way there's not guessing, no crossing your fingers, no hoping, just "ordering and knowing it will work".
