Quick FSB 800 and MOBO questions.

Post by Tuz76 »

Hi guys!!

Ill keep this as quick as possible. Just some one line answers would be great plz!
:)

Winxp Pro, P42.6 with 800FSB and Asus p4p800 Mobo. 2 x 256 Kingston DDR400 RAM.

1. How do I verify that my PC system RAM is running as Dual Channel?

2. How do I verify that my PC FSB is running at 800?

3. Asus Q-Fan - Enabled at what ratio? 11/15? I just have 3 of 5 PCI Slots filled + 1 AGP.

4. Why does Device Manager list 2 processors under "Processors". I only have one.

Thanks Guys,

Tuz

1. Should say upon boot up, if you are running dual channel or not.

2. Try a program called CPU-Z, it should tell you your FSB.

4. Because you have a processor that has hyperthreading techonology.

4. Should show two procs. One is physical and the other logical.
As for the utlity Mohan suggested you can find it and others here:

The very first boot screen when you turn the PC on should tell you whether or not it's running in Dual-Channel DDR mode. If it goes by too fast, start hitting DEL on your keyboard to enter the BIOS.

Find the screen in the BIOS shown in the screenshot below; the "CPU External Frequency (MHz)" should be at 200 MHz (200 x 4 = 800) and the "DRAM Frequency" should be at 400 MHz. Then you'll know for sure.

Thanks guys i got my hands on cpu-z

OK some quick things regarding my p4p800 Mobo and intel 2.6 800fsb cpu

Is this correct for a machine with 800 FSB speed?

1. Core speed - 2606.0MHZ
Multiplier x 13
FSB 200.5MHZ
Bus Speed 801.8 MHZ

The FSB says 200.5? Should it not be 800?

Also it has this under the memory tab

Channels # - Dual
Performance Mode - Disabled.

Whats performance mode mean?

It will never be 100% dead-on. It will either be a little below or a little above 200 MHz.

The "performance mode" is basically the Turbo setting you have in the BIOS (see the pic I previously posted). All it does is lower the timings on the memory to the lowest ones supported by the RAM's specs. I wouldn't bother with it, as you'll only be able to discern a minute difference in overall performance by enabling it.

Thanks Burke but im still not clear. :/

"It will never be 100% dead-on. It will either be a little below or a little above 200 MHz."

Why 200? I have an "800" capable mobo and cpu?? Shouldnt that figure be 800 instead of 200?

"The "performance mode" is the Turbo setting you have in the BIOS. All it does is lower the timings on the memory to the lowest ones supported by the RAM's specs."

Ok so I have DDR400 RAM. How should I have it in BIOS to take advantage of this.

P.S (Im not interested in "overclocking", just running at my systems peak capabilities under normal settings'.

Thanks and sorry to sound naive on this topic. Im learning though! :)

CPU's are never an absolute perfect dead on frequency...they often waver just a whisker. A couple of 10ths of a Hz one way or another.

Now for the CPU....the "C" P4's...they run on 4x the system bus multiplier. 4x200=800.

Turbo mode will also kill some legacy hardware settings on the motherboard....to free up more resources.
