Hard drive noises

Post by macr »

I have an IBM 80GB hard drive and every so often it would make two loud clanking sounds and then quit. I couldn't take it anymore so I just bought a Maxtor 160GB HD Ultra ATA 133. Now all the sudden this one's making noises that sound like static everytime I'm accessing data on the drive.

The 80GB HD is less than a year old and the Maxtor one is less than a week old. The funny thing is, I moved the 80GB HD to another computer to transfer the data to the new drive and it doesn't make the clanking sounds anymore. A buddy of mine told me it might be a MOBO or Power Supply problem. Anyone have suggestions as to what it might be?

Thanks,
Terry

Enable SMART in Bios. That should give you warning if your drive is about to die.

May want to try another PSU, may have a bad ground internally, being that you get noise from your HDD, I had read somewhere that IBM HDD,s were not very good, I have 2 maxtors HDD,s, they have always worked well, Later
AMD ATHLON XP 2100+ OVERCLOCKED TO 1.824 GIG, MSI K6 ULTRA 2C MOBO, 512 DDR 2700 RAM, ATI VIDEO DDR, DUAL HDD, 7200 RPM, CREATIVE LIVE AUDIO, SURROUND SOUND 5.1, CUSTOM CASE, WINDOW SIDE, UV LIGHT BLACK, UV REACTIVE CABLES, 7 FAN SYSTEM !!!

I'm sure there was an issue with a certain build (or builds) of the Promise ATA controller, if this is the controller you are using you could try an older revision of the driver (25 methinks).

The problem was always more apparent when shutting down the computer, with a whiney noise then a click, then a nother whiney noise... but that was just me and my old ASUS A7V & A7V133 boards.
Nothing in life is as good as it should be, but death ought to be at least as bad as it sounds.
