new pc specs // should I upgrade my power supply?)

Post by ze2o »

I will be running a:

2.17 GHz AMD Athlon XP 2800+
1024 MB 400 MHz Samsung DDR
Geforce 3 Ti 500 (until I figure out what videocard I want)
80 GiG Maxtor HD
+Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 (later)

I have a 350 watt Enermax PSU right now, and was I thinking about using a 450 watt Enermax PSU.

Do you think my PSU will be able to handle the new changes, or should I upgrade to a better PSU as well?

And please post videocard recommendations and links to benchmarks if possible.

Thank you.

+also I will be running the new ASUS A7N8X motherboard.
WinXP Pro SP2 RC2
ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe
XP3200+
1GB Samsung DDR
9600XT
120 GB SATA Seagate

IMHO, more is always better in a PSU (future upgradability/compatibility and all). You never know, you might want to add a RAID or something one day with four hard drives. Buying more than you need now will save money later on.

I ran a p4 3.06, radeon 9700n pro and 2 x80 gb hd in a raid, a capture card, 2 cdroms, and a hard drive rack off of my 350w enermax...you should be ok unless you feel like i do and want to waste money on a 550w antec true control :)

PSU is fine unless your worried about rails / overclocking

Vid card -

Radeon 9600 Pro, or 9500 Pro if you can find one
[if your going budget, but if you can afford it]

Radeon 9800 pro

Insteada audigy 2 i would go for a Turtle Bay Santa Cruz...

A good 350 watter like Enermax...you're fine. Not like you're running several hard drives, and several IDE cd-drives.

I ran my older AMD system for a while on it's 330 watt Enermax. 1900+ overclocked to 2100, 512 megs, GF3 64 megger, two Seagate Cuda drives in RAID 0, cd-rom, internal zip drive, 3x case fans, two fans on the video card. Ran like a champ..still does...sitting in the corner of the room folding.

A good power supply like Antec or Enermax is better than a cheap brand of higher rating. I'll take a 350 Enermax over a 400 or higher of other brands. Power supplies are starting to get waaay overkill lately....odd, since many components these days are consuming less power than they did years ago.

looks like a pretty nice setup and I agree with what everybody else says, it wont hurt to upgrade your PSU but your PC should run fine..
