cable or dsl?

Post by vietformulaone »

i wanna knoe what you guys think is better....i am really debating on what to get..

service info:

dsl= 50 dollars a month...1.5mbps downstream, 128kbps upstream...
cable= 42 dollars a month...2 mbps downstream, up to 384kbps upstream...
---the reason why i am asking this, is because my friend has cable, and another friend has dsl, but the dsl seem to have better pings in counter strike than the cable.

why would you pick dsl/cable?

and can someone explain what a static ip is? and what the pros/con of it is?

and which would be better, for gaming pings...such as counter strike?

The DSL will probably have a slightly better ping than Cable. But go with the cable anyways. You probably won't see a noticeable difference in gaming... and cable wins in the price/value comparison. With 384k Upload you can host your own servers with 10-12 people. Going with cable will also save you $100 a year. With those specific packages my suggestion would be to go with the cable... but keep in mind there are pros/cons for each connection. :D

Read This

DSL has a direct connection from you to your phone company, whereas cable is shared among different users on nodes.

I've never had DSL (I'm only 15 anyways :D ...) but cable has served me well. The download speeds are faster in price/value and the pings will be very similiar to DSL.

The cable is cheaper but with dsl ur speeds will be more constitant if you leave in a populated area get the dsl ur cable speeds will slow to a crawl, I had both The reasons I switched was what i said up above, however if you are in a smaller town then go wit cable.

Prices vary depending on your location. My DSL is cheaper than cable for comparable speeds. Especially since cable would add on a surcharge since I don't have their standard service. Also, I don't do online gaming, so latency isn't important. My DSL connection has been solid except for the day that somebody cut a major fiber connection that took out my area code and a few others. :(

One thing about cable is that some block any type of server... such as web or game.
Easy fix is to change the listening port on your web server, haven't tried to find a way around games yet.
Although you should be able to host CS on a different listening port.
Just remember your then breaking the TOS.

I'll post from one of my other replies to this popular question:
***
Completely varies, according to where you live, what ISP you use, etc.

And believe me when I say this ....as this question gets asked a lot, and I always crack up seeing people say "Get this...because I have it and it rules!". "This" is better because "that" sucks.
...there is no one single technology that is better for all people. The answer really really varies upon a lot.

In general, the average home cable account often provides faster download and upload speeds, than the average home DLS account. The performance of cable is also not distance dependent, like DSL is. But the performance of cable varies greatly according to where you live...the density of other users sharing your "node". Cable in high population areas has a reputation of slowing down to glacial speeds at times.

On the contrary, DSL, that pipe is yours to the CO's main pipes....you are not sharing the bandwidth until you get up to the backbone of your ISP...a much better setup. But DSL is also distance dependent...the farther you are from the CO, the slower you speeds will be. DSL is also generally better for gaming, a benefit of it's design is lower latency (lower pings).

Add to the above, the availability of good ISP's in your area. You usually have a choice, especially with DSL. The local phone company isn't always the best performing DSL....there are often much better ISP's to get DSL from. I've stuck with the same ISP for many many years, they had excellent dial up service back in the dial up modem days, so I stuck with them for DSL. Runs circles around the local phone companies DSL service.

Add to the above yet again....general line conditions..on the street, your neighborhood, from the street to your house...and inside the house. A person on one street could have lines in good condition all the way in...and have excellent internet access. Yet go down the street, or a block over....another person with an account with the same ISP as the first person could have lots of trouble, and a miserable experience. He'd probably blame it on the ISP though.

Cable in my area is pretty good also, since I'm in a rather sparse area. In order of preference..I'd take my DSL with my current ISP as my first choice, it blows away the local cable and the local phone company DSL. I'd take cable as my second choice...because I think it's better than the DSL which my local phone company provides..which would be my third choice.

Some areas, you can get Optimum Online cable with a 10 meg download...that's pretty lucky. Other areas, you can get 6 meg download DSL...that's pretty common in my area. Yet other areas, ISP's only offer measly little 128k or 256k accounts with 1 or the other.

The local cable company in my area advertises "Twice as fast as DSL". Well, if you read the fine print...you'll notice they compare it to 640k DSL. Well...wake up knuckleheads....because the local DSL service is 1500 down. That crock cracks me up...I have no idea how they get away with that, but I'm sure they dupe a lot of people with it.

Get the DSL. Why? Because DSL offers low latency, superfast web browsing, constant bandwidth, and cheaper rate than cable does. I had SBC DSL and it rocks compared to Cox HSI. I'm using Cox HSI and I'm having packet loss problems, high latency in online gaming, slow speeds, and Cox keeps messing with the service. When I had DSL, it was more constant and uptime was 100%, plus latency was lower than on cable and web browsing was superfast on the DSL. When the cable went out last Fall, I thought to myself, "Thank God I have DSL!" Because my DSL was up and running while Cox was down, and I could still surf the net and watch Yahoo Launch Music Videos but couldn't watch tv. I called Cox cable tv support and they told me engineers was working on the cable in my area. I was so happy with my DSL. I'm thinking of going back to DSL when I find a job and dropping Cox HSI for good because web browsing on Cox HSI is slow, packet loss problems, slow speeds, and high latency. I never have problems with the DSL, I have more problems with Cox HSI than with DSL service. So get the DSL if you're a gamer. DSL may be slower than cable, but you will be happy and never will have problems, plus web browsing will be superfast on DSL(I click on webpages and I'm there at a blink of a eye). On cable, I click on a link and wait, wait, and wait. Plus you share bandwidth with neighbors on cable, and on DSL, the bandwidth is yours to the CO/ISP backbone.

To others, I apologize, but DSL is faster in my area and cable is slow. No one has DSL service, everyone has cable modems and that's why it's slow. I told my mom(I live with my mom and sister), "As soon as I find a FT job, I'm paying the phone bill, and ordering DSL because Cox HSI is too expensive, too slow, and I have too many problems with Cox HSI." She said, "ok." I'm currently looking for a job right now, but no one's hiring. I will try in the Fall :)

I would go with whatever is the most reliable.....I have cable and I hate it....Its really fast for downloading (1.5mbit here guaranteed) but I have slow upload at 128kbit and the service is appauling....I dont think Ive had a good cable company out of 4 that I have tried in various different places of living. I cant say much about DSL as Ive never had it but I know Verizon sucks for a phone company here....I hate it too.....Sounds like I hate everywhere eh?....lol.....I did like my local Utilities company in the last place I lived...They offered everything themselves..High Speed Internet, Phone Service, Cable TV (Digital), Trash Pickup and Power Service....They rocked but they were for people who lived in the city (Newnan Utilities in Newnan, Georgia....a suburb of Atlanta). You should do lots of asking around if you have the options of shopping around for High Speed ISPs.

He's pretty much right on about everything he said, the only issue I would take up is the distance from the central office line. It's partly true, if you are fed off of copper straight from the c.o. But there are many fiber systems that go out to remote terminals that act as "mini" c.o.'s. There is virtually no loss across the fiber even across thousands of feet. So techically, your house can be over twenty-five thousand feet from the office, yet be only 100 feet from the remote. That's the same as being 100 feet from the c.o. As far as connection goes, I unfortunately have to have cable right now untill the dsl gets turned up for me in November. The speed is pretty decent, but the consistency just plain sucks. If you are one of the lucky ones who is offered a choice, make darn sure that you play one company against the other untill the lowest price is reached. Always act like you're leaning towards their competitor. You should be able to lock in a low rate for about a year or so.

I'm guessing your DSL and Cable Providers in your area are Road Runner or Verizon Online, In my opinion I like both, Cable gives you more speed especially in my area with Optimum Online, 44.95 for 10,000/1,000 Speed Caps and on a average people get between 6,000-9,500 download and 900-980 upload, so speed has a advantage over DSL, but DSL is a dedicated connection with your OWN bandwidth, no sharing like Cable, DSL keeps a very stable connection and is very reliable, I have Verizon Online right now and I love it but I'm switching to Cable due to the fact I have the need for speed ;)

I've lived in 7 different states, and cable has alwas been cheaper with higher bandwidth everytime. As far as pings in games go, in Counter-Strike i get 40-50 pings in servers that are in California. I'm in Missouri. In Chicago servers i get 15-20.
