Laggier than my backup netzero 56k

Post by compkid87 »

This has been going on for months now, actually, ever since my dad purchased Cox Cable Internet (3000/256). I've been a somewhat regular user here at speedguide and already know all about the reset modem and blah blah lol...

Anyways, I play online games, specifically Rogue Spear. As most of you know, its a first person shooter, but theres a huge lag problem. It only updates where people move every 5-8 seconds, making it impossible to play. For example, they would be running into the wall for 5 seconds, then appear across of map. Its not spiking, because I can still have a steady 60-120 ping to the server. I can't even host more than one person without it spiking and being unplayable. 256k upload should be able to host 8+.

Yes, I have a great comp for this game (2ghz, 1gig ram, 64mb DDR) and I've even installed a fresh win2k operating system on a partition ive made, installed rogue spear first, play, and it does the same thing. I've tried each version of Directx ranging from 6.1 to 9.0 -- Same result. I've switched NIC Cards -- same result. I know its the Cable connection because I dont have the problem on my backup dial-up. In command prompt I've pinged many servers and have a stable ping of 40-120... no packet loss whatsoever. I've downloaded cable nut and used the custom settings for cox cable that manosteel gave to me awhile back.

I'm completely confused. I encouraged my dad to get broadband just for that one game, and it lags like heck. I'm stuck. I thought about calling the cable company but what would I say? Check the line to make sure it has a strong signal?...even thou im downloading and uploading at great speeds without packet loss and getting great pings? I can't host more that one person in any game. If anyone has had a problem like this or know what I should ask the cable company to do please reply.

Thanks in advance,
Drue
