I have a problem with my network

I have a cable acces shared by an win2000 PRO SERVER PCs. All works fine except one thing :)

Here is my configuration :

Win2000 server
2 WinXP client

my cable modem enter in my win2000 PC and i have another network card link up to a hub to shared my internet.

Someone told me that the problem is the MTU but i think that it's not the case because all PC have the value 1500.

When my server was on madrake, all works fine so i think that i must change some setting in my win2000 pc.

please dont tell me to install mandrake :D

Someone else can help with network setup.

I just thought you should be sure that a popup stopper or script blocker wasn't the culprit before you go changing the network around. If it's only "some" sites, it may also be a DNS cache problem.

Check these things first, while you're waiting, and reply back.

Also, IE6 updates may have taken out Java support. You may need the latest virtual machine from MS, or use the Sun version.

Is the 2000 server a DC? If so, do you have DNS forwarders configured? Also, what are your DHCP scope options? This sounds like a DNS configuration problem.
Observe everything...focus on nothing..

You say "Windows 2000 Server"...is it really Win2K Server, or Windows 2000 Professional running ICS that you call a "server".

Some popup stoppers create a HOSTS file that is still there even if disabled. Search your PC for a file called HOSTS and rename it to test if that's the problem. Close all open IE windows before you do it.

To Flush DNS
Click on the Start Menu then RUN. In the window type "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter. In command window that opens type:

ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter

Also - By default Windows 2K & XP cache everything in the DNS cache service, both correct and faulty DNS lookups. To increase performance by eliminating the caching of faulty DNS lookups, change the following values from whatever their original values are to zero.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi
ces\Dnscache\Parameters]
"NegativeCacheTime"=dword:00000000
"NetFailureCacheTime"=dword:00000000
"NegativeSOACacheTime"=dword:00000000

DC = Domain Controller. Are you set up as a Domain? If so, you had to configure DNS on this server. Or is it just running as a member server in a peer-to-peer Lan? What is running DHCP? Your router or the server?

I'm not in a domain.

I dont have router, I have a hub so the DHCP is running by my server...

Please.... more details!! You're spoon feeding us little bits of info., and I need more to help. Are you running ICS on the 2K server? Or are you running 3rd party proxy software? 2 NICs I'm assuming. How are TCP properties set on the NICs? Are DNS settings manually entered? Are they your ISPs DNS servers? If you run ipconfig /all what are the results? What are TCP/IP properties of the clients?

I'm sure we can help you, but we need some specifics. I still believe it is DNS. Also, if you set up DHCP, you configured no scope options at all?

I'm figuring it's the same thing as TWW is saying.

How is your 2K Server setup...literally...all the details. What TCP properties does it have...all the details...gateway, DNS, etc. And what TCP properties are the clients being given ..again, details...gateway, DNS, etc etc.

The problem could be your MTU is set too high. Try dropping it down to 1492. I had the web page (and email) problem with a Cisco 802 IDSL router. A nice Cisco tech figured it out for me.

Hmmm.... MTU of 1500 should not be an issue with a cable modem ( I don't believe). Thought that was only a DSL issue. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable tha me on MTU settings will pop in and clear that up.

Hope bino posts back- this is interesting. But, I'm outa' here until Monday afternoon.

I've only seen MTU affect e-mail when it had attatched files...plain e-mails would send fine, but mail with an attatchment of any size would error out on an SMTP error.

Lets do some narrowing down here....those two sites below...can you tracert and ping from the server and the clients?

Pinging http://www.grandprix3.net should come back resolving to mercure.grandprix4.net which is 194.250.105.190

Your second linke should resolve hof3.sim-racing.net to http://www.sim-racing.net at 212.5.70.173

Try running pings to the above from both your server, and your workstations. My hunch is if it's a DNS issue, your workstations will not be able to resolve that name to an IP. If they can resolve those names to an IP, then perhaps there's something else like MTU as the cause.
