WD 120gig 5400RPM HD

Does Western Digital even make one any longer? Is Maxtor my only choice for a 5400 drive of that size?

Yes they have a 250 gig 7200rpm special edition

Looks like the Maxtor 540DX series is the only decent one IMO. Can't find a WD anywhere.

Can I ask why you would want 5400 instead of 7200?

For storage you don't really need 7200 RPM. That's what I want a 5400 RPM for.

Plus, 7200 RPM increases noise

you can try doing a special order from some mom and pop shops, but to be honest, from the looks of it you will only find most people carrying the 540dx or even be willing to order them, just because the prices of the 7200rpm are very close to those of the 5400rpm. I know maxtor currently has a 120gb 7200rpm (2mbcache) out for about 180CAD atm.

Its for an XBOX, almost completely due to the fact that it runs cooler.

On the PC end, I would probably pick nothing less than a 7200rpm drive with 8 megs of cache.

Actually when I went from my Maxtor 5400 to my WD 7200 8gb cahce, I thought the drive was quieter then my maxtor

but then again I dont really pay attention to the noise that much

My Seagate, which is a 7200, is MUCH quieter than my WD 30gig 5400rpm.

It's all about high-pitched whine and whistle. 7200+ RPM drived whistle too much.

My new 7200rpm WD is much more quiet than the 5400rpm Maxtor in my other computer.

It could be due to the fact that it has been running almost nonstop since November 2000.
