when aol bought out netscape it came with it.

Microsoft sat on their laurels too long and set stuff up in their browser code that is not easily changed. now they have been passed by several other browsers and the security holes have gotten huge.

I use firefox.

That winsock fix along with a repair of the routing table fixed the problem. :thumb:

apparently some spyware had gotten on the computer and running adaware had removed it but the corruption of the winsock remained. Microsoft's reset didn't fix it, but that other program did. i'm gonna keep that on ...

those are probably restore disks, and can only be used to wipe out the current disk formatting including all data and restoring the original software, including windows ME. i could be wrong, but i doubt it.

Murman, thanks for the link to microsoft's article. Unfortunately, that reset procedure didn't work. :confused:

The router has 50 addresses to give out and only 8 computers to give them to. Ethernet card drivers have been uninstalled and reinstalled, DHCP is working fine on all other computers ...

Weird XP networking problem.

The computer in question cannot get an IP address from the router, and therefore uses the automatic 169 address, so it cannot access network resources, including the internet.

When I manually enter an IP address into the system, including a default gateway, it accesses file shares, but still doesn ...

You are trying to create a LAMP server. if you already have the php, mysql and apache, then all you need is the debian mini iso mentioned above. install that and then install your software separately.
