well, something is listening on that port from the outside. But I couldn't get it to log in. It looked like a permissions error, but who knows really. Are you sure the DNS is set up correctly? What happens when you try it using the IP address instead of the name? And how about getting FTP to work on ...

Depends how your network is set up. I will assume that you have a firewall, and that this firewall is able to block outgoing ports. Well, it is as simple as figuring out what port Kazza uses and not allowing that type of traffig out through your firewall.

For servers, we usually use the Intel Pro 100s...

If you are just getting it for home use, I would go with whatever is on special at your local computer store.

Initial report on SnapGear

OK everyone... I got a new firewall recently and thought I would drop by and give some initial impressions.

New hardware: SnapGear Lite, Linksys 8 port Hub.
Vendor: Provantage.

After coming here for some advice, I settled on the above hardware since the SnapGear was one of the less expensive ...

You actually can't "Upgrade" from ME to 2k because 2k came out before ME... So MS consideres ME an upgrade from 2k and the upgrade stuff won't work. Sorry, not the answer you wanted but it is a better way to do it.

OK... about the drive sharing. Open up Window's Exploorer -> Right click on the ...

Sure it is possible, but it would require a trip to Radio Shack (or another geek type shop) to get some speaker wire/adaptors/... stuff. I don't think you can do it with a computer network though. You basically need to plug the 5 computers into a speaker hub (for lack of a better term) and connect ...

Those 2 things are set up completely different. I am assuming that you don't have a router or anything like that and that the cable modem is connected directly to one of the computers? Well, you will need to do something called Internet Connection Sharing (at least that was the name prior to XP) in ...

I couldn't find anything on the MR314 specifically, but I am surprised that telnet didn't work. Just to make sure, you were on one of the systems at home (behind the router) and did telnet 192.168.0.1, then put in the admin password? (I am assuming that your router works like mine... might be a bad ...

There are 2 steps to doing something like that. The first is to forward the port (like you have done). The second is to relax the firewall for that port. This part is best done through a telnet session.

I will let Netgear's Customer Service Site walk you through it at http://www.expressresponse.com ...

What you will need to do is forward the ports that you need to the correct machine, the one that is hosting the web server. I don't know exactly how to set up port forwarding with the Linksys, but web traffic runs on port 80 by default. So you would want to forward port 80 traffic to your web server ...

What do you mean it doesn't show up? When you look at the network you see the computer and any printers, but not the C Drive? Check on what the shared name is, because by default it is C$. Make sure it is ISCA ceritified firewall. SPI is also very important if you're running public servers and are serious about security.

Hello oh great and wise networking gurus. I have a question that only your excellency can answer. (think that is enough ego massaging?)
