my experience with them in NY was positive. In fact, I still have dial-up from them and they host one of my sites.

YeOleStoneCat,
thanks for your advice. I'm not acting weird or being smart when I say that...I know what I'm doing as far as ports that need to be opened..etc (PCA 5631,5631 was a typo...and I use it to manage all my clients remotely with no freezing also..I can not imagine why the other member has ...

in my experience, ports 20 as well as 21 need to be fwd. Put your PC behind your firewall/router, give it a static LAN side IP, fwd ports 20,21 to that static IP, your FTP server should work. ISP are getting slicker...they might block 21..sooooo use another port... 70,71 - of course you'll have to ...

I do not have or use XP. I think Win2K has the same firewall or control over ports and protocols that XP has. I have never had to use it but perhaps I should give it a try. Thanks for your info. I never thought about a non-router solution.

Router to Router (bridging or routing)

I have a linksys DSL router (BEFSR11). It works just fine EXCEPT it only allows a maximum of 10 ports forwarded to local servers. I called netgear...same thing-10max- SMC has one that does 20 but essentially it's 10 bcuz, unlike netgear where you can use a single line to fwd both TCP & UDP packets ...

An ADSL with dynamic will work just as well except you'll need a service like TZO ($$) or NO-IP.COM to link your dynamic IP to a hostname. This hostname you'll use in PCA or any application that uses TCP. I've been running an enterprise class mail server (smtp, pop3, imap, direct access) on ADSL for ...

Since you're at home, it does not hurt to use two static addresses. Now I am making quite a few presumptions about the equipment that you have and what you're trying to do. It would help if you dscribed all the equipment and how it is currently connected and what you're trying to accomplish.

Remember that you are not limited to using ports that are typically reserved for a specific service. You can use 81 for http, 22 for ftp or any other port number for any service that you choose to use. If they scan type "typical" port, they'll get nothing becasue you're not using the 'typical' port ...

Why would you need a static IP

with free services that allow you to use a hostname to connect to your dynamic IP address, there's hardly a need for a static....except of course if you want to use Novell's Border Manager's VPN services...then you need a static IP. I haven't check out their latest release to see if they have taken ...

HomePortal DSL Routers

I read an article that 2Wire wrote about their DSL routers outperforming LnkSys and Netgear by miles. Has anyone used a 2Wire DSL router or heard anything to substantiate their claims.
