ok...it was an auction on ebay so i didn't even bother placing a 2nd bid.
i'm already working with two hard drives...my internal one which is reasonably fast for a notebook drive, and a 120gb drive with all the video. ideally i should have one more, but notebook drives are costly, and external ones ...

512MB to 768MB
i found some decent deals for a stick of 512 for my laptop (currently 256-256). is there a respectable gain from this? i'm noticing tons of lag running adobe premiere, and encore dvd working with about 50GB of audio and video :) . not sure if it's worth the $40-50us i'd be paying for the memory ...

it's not about the number of megapixels as most consumers think (i'm speaking as a reasonably experienced photographer). lots of stuff is important in picture quality.
as a very rough estimate, a 5MP camera gives a resolution of 2500x2000. an 8MP camera would be the equivalent of roughly 3200x2400 ...

any camera that's not a DSLR will focus relatively slowly. in that respect, sony has one of the finest AF systems using the laser hologram rather than the typical lamp. you might like the DSC-W1, DSC-p100 the DSC-V1, or the DSC-F828. the latter two can use external flashes.

dns round robin
if two servers are set up to balance load using round robin, will the dns server be able to fall back onto only server 1 if server 2 goes offline, or is the process passive and leave every other user with a server error as they are referred to the offline server?
thanks,
Jeremy

for a student, the 85/8600 series is a little bulky for me. it is fantastic for DVDs, and games, but carrying it is a pain. my battery lasts about 3-4 hours int eh classroom, probably more for the 8600 centrino series. it just isn't as suitable for school as others are. also with that much carrying ...

the mobile components will probably be old enough that xp will have built-in drivers, and also becuase it's an intel-based [well-supported] system.

about the indoor shots, you should normally turn the flash setting to off when shooting beyond 10-15'. the auto settings will try to use flash and screw up the picture as it has many times with the two cameras i've owned. the graininess was probably boosted ISO to make up for the distance, improper ...

i have that same drive and it runs quickly and pretty quietly. opt for larger rather than smaller (eg at least 120gb) if you can afford it because the moment you begin editing and downloading video and burning DVDs, 80GB will fill up fast.

reformat roughly every 9-12 months for the average user who says "yes" to every activex installation and downloads bits of software all the time.
if you keep a computer clean software-wise and run xp or 2000, you can let it run for a number of years. in your case i would run with no less than 512 ...

before i plunk down $$$ for memory which has become insanely expensive as of late, could you possibly explain why the memory isn't functioning with the new frequency ratio? if you set the bus to 130MHz (OC situation), the ratio is 1:1, then the memory runs at 260MHz, or pc2100 spec. and when running ...

actually that *was* using memtest86. i just let it run for 30mins to get a basic idea; nothing happened at stock (like 6 pass, 0 error, looked fine to me), then once i oc'd the errors piled up from the beginning of the test with identical CAS timings, just running at 1:1 to the fsb (eg 130:130) vs 3 ...

most of those laptops have integrated graphics. they're playable, but i would get one with a dedicated card at the very least, even if you don't intend to game. also 4200rpm drives are unwelcome on all these fast processing laptops. definitely wise to try before buying to see how smooth they run ...
