Optimization for linux..

Hey,
I have Ubuntu 2.10 Edgy Linux running on my box and wanted to find if there are any speed tweaks or optimizers for linux.. the speeds that i'm gettin on my windows box are great but in linux they just are'nt upto the level it should be..

any help is appreciated..

AWESOME! it worked! i downloaded 6 mb with a download speed of 31.6 Kbps which is good! it neva went below that speed..

I am in india and my connection speed is advertised to be 256kbps(slow!) and i usually get a peak download rate of 32kbps download and 6kbps upload... web pages load just fine and fast.. the fluctuating download speed is the only problem..

could somebody not help me tweak my connection.. the problem is that when i downlaod anything then the downloads starts at its peak value adn then gradually goes down to 9kbps! after that it again starts increasing slowly and reaches a good value around peak value in about 5 mins! Is this becasue of ...

the settings shown when choosing the optimal setup for my connection speed are less then wat my current values are.. so should is still apply them or should i retain the current ones as the internet may go slow after applying the settings?

thx a lot.. after posting this question, i researched some more on it and now i have a Windows VPN running between the 2 comps and ports are controlled by a small perl script which closes the ports after the job is done and that improves the security a bit.. and for the rush part, well i meant that ...
